Excitement As Africa Renewal University Gets Charted

0

By Tenywa Rodney Nesti

Africa Renewal University after a long while, finally gets a charter from National Council for Higher Education.

This came through in a letter dated 13th March 2024, signed by Prof. Mary J.N. Okwakol the Executive Director of National Council for Higher Education, addressed to the Vice Chancellor of Africa Renewal University.

“I am pleased to inform you that following your application for grant of a charter, H.E. the President of the Republic of Uganda has approved and granted Africa Renewal University a Charter.”

The long journey of being charted for the university begun way back in 2019, when the applications was forwarded to National Council of Higher Education. This was followed by a number of meetings & inspection visits said Dr. Byamukama Vincent the current Vice chancellor of the university.

“We are deeply honoured to receive this charter from the government of Uganda. This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to providing transformative education that equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to address the challenges facing Uganda and Africa today. Together, we will continue to strive for excellence in education and make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and communities ”

The National Council for Higher Education is mandated to regulate the establishment and management of higher education institutions as well as regulating the quality of higher education, equating qualifications and advising Government on higher education matters.

The charter bestowed upon a university by the Ugandan Government through NCHE solidifies the institution’s status as a recognized hub of academic excellence and innovation. This accreditation emphasizes Africa Renewal University’s dedication to advancing education and empowering communities in Uganda.

For a University to be charted in Uganda, it ought to fulfill a number of stringent requirements in the areas of academic, administrative, and supportive services, such as possession of lecture halls, libraries, and laboratories. Also ought to have their operational procedures, bylaws, and regulations, course programs, curricula, student assessment procedures, and examination regulations. Records indicate that over 31 universities are currently operating under provisional certificates as they strive to attain charter status

Africa Renewal University, a university a private Christian University founded in 2007 as Gaba Bible; a theological institute for equipping Christian leaders. It was provisionally licensed in 2013 and in 2014 rebranded to its current name, diversifying to offering even non- theological courses.

The University now has over 1500 students where in its recent graduation, last year 2023, graduated over 500 students. The University is located in Wakiso Buloba, 20km along   Kampala – Mityana Road.

PAUL MUGOYA: Why Ugandans Remain Quiet When The Country Is Being Looted And Plundered.

0

Its a shame when the country is being looted, plundered and devoured by just a few mortal beings while Ugandans decide to keep quiet as though nothing is happening. Big shame! Now why should we complain of poverty, no medicine in government hospitals, etc.

I call upon every Ugandan to stand up against corruption, and say no. Corruption is evil and is killing you and you nation. I call upon our Army, Police, Prisons, the Intelligence community, Teachers, Nurses, Doctors, Sub County Leaders, Workers, Farmers, RDCs, CAOs, LCVs, Councillors, MPs, Jua kali Workers, Boda Bodas, Drivers and the Mothers of our children, PSs, Ministers, the President of our Country, to wake up and say no to corruption, Uganda “egwawo.”

There is a yelling disparity of salaries for our men in uniform, who earn just 600K while some few over-privileged people go home with 400 million a week. The salaries have to be revised and realigned. This is dangerous.

How can teachers survive on 300-400K a month? This means even a potter digging in someone’s garden earns more. Look at Nigeria, a bigger economy than East Africa, with plenty of oil because the economy is riddled with corruption, it has stagnated and people are walloping in poverty.

Sometimes there is a scarcity of petro-filling pumps. Did you know that Nigeria is the biggest black African producer of oil? So don’t get excited with our small oil revenues when corruption levels remain this high.

Gen. Muhoozi even cautioned us from electing corrupt leaders. He said this in Masaka. I appeal to Ugandans to get a book and begin compiling names of those they suspect to be corrupt. Please do not be afraid, save yourself and your country, and be brave like Mr. Burora, Mr. Sentongo, Ms. Atuhaire, Mr.Toko, and Gen. Muhoozi.

Don’t worry, there will be a day for accountability. Our President should as much as possible avoid inaugurating projects or properties that have been ill-gotten using stolen public money.

This can have serious implications in the public eye, and I’m getting worried as a citizen that if nothing is done now with this endemic corruption, we easily can slide into anarchy like our neighbors in DRC and Sudan. Acute depravity together with income disparity is a time bomb.

Paul Polly Mugoya, a concerned citizen.

VIDEO: Netizens React As Pastor Bugingo Asks For Shs100m In Just Two Days

1

Controversial as he is, pastor Bugingo is again the centre of criticism after he asked his followers to collect an amount between Shs70m to Shs100m. The amount is not for finishing or for doors and windows of Pentagon but according to him he needs that amount in just two days.

As usual his gullible congregants are seen lining up on the pulpit to donate to their pastor who said he wants only those serious not jokers to take the money. He’s seen in the video also ordering his body guard to write down their names, amount and their contacts.

ADVERT: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

The money is meant to facilitate a big crusade ahead of Easter that will take place at Canaan land and Bugingo says it’s the last to happen at his church premises.

Early this year, Bugingo was attached by unknown gunmen who rained bullets on his monster vehicle LexusV8. The attack left Bugingo with minor injuries but his SFC bodyguard Richard Muhumuza didn’t survive despite the pastor driving him himself to Mulago to medical attention.

Amidst the pain, Bugingo announced that he has suspended collections for his church construction dubbed ‘Pentagon’. He has been collecting billions for PENTAGON construction since 2017 and the foundation or a brick is yet to be laid at Canaan land.

Netizens are now once again lashing at Bugingo for continuously draining his congregants without showing where the money goes and what the previous collected amount has so far done. But a government policy in the offing will now force pastors to account for the money they collect and what they do with the money.

Innovation in forest management for a sustainable future for African forests

Innovation in forest management for a sustainable future for African forests
Innovation in forest management for a sustainable future for African forests

Innovation blossoms in the heart of Africa as the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) continues to lead the charge for responsible forest management globally. Established over three decades ago to combat global deforestation, degradation, and unsustainable forest management practices, FSC’s mission continues to address the unique challenges and opportunities within Africa’s diverse forest landscapes.

This year’s International Day of Forests theme, “Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World,” resonates deeply with FSC. Nana Darko, FSC Africa Certification Manager and William Lawyer, Policy Manager, Africa, in this opinion piece, highlight innovation as the cornerstone of FSC’s approach.

Addressing critical needs

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Africa loses nearly 4 million hectares of forests each year. But to address this challenge and the myriad of forest issues facing the continent, traditional government-led efforts are far from sufficient. The emergence of FSC as a market-based, voluntary instrument, was a welcome innovative tool to address this challenge and accelerate the transition towards responsible forest management.

Embracing challenges and opportunities

FSC’s dedication to innovation infuses its entire system, from crafting rigorous standards to ensuring their effective implementation. This relentless drive for improvement keeps FSC relevant in a rapidly changing landscape, proactively addressing emerging challenges in responsible forest management.

Despite limitations that hamper widespread forest protection across Africa’s massive 637 million hectares, government commitment to FSC principles is essential. Countries like Gabon, the Republic of Congo, and Uganda exemplify the power of this commitment. Their recognition of FSC has demonstrably spurred sustainable practices, strengthening forest management and nature protection.

Becoming a better leader in forest stewardship

Close to three decades of experience in Africa have equipped FSC to become a leader in sustainable forestry. This translates into a continuously evolving system, with continually refined standards and processes. This unwavering commitment to learning allows FSC to adapt seamlessly to a dynamic environmental and social landscape.

FSC’s success is further underscored by its proven track- record, certifying over 160 million hectares of forest globally, of which nearly 10 million hectares in Africa alone.

Adapting to change

FSC actively aligns its Principles and Criteria (P&C) with the latest advancements in forest management to reflect stakeholder consensus and concerns. Incorporation of aspects such as Intact Forest Landscapes (IFLs) and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) exemplifies this dedication to staying relevant and sensitive to changing stakeholder perceptions.

In 2021, FSC introduced new guidelines to ensure a participatory and equitable approach to decision-making through FPIC. This strengthens stakeholder involvement and reaffirms FSC’s commitment to sustainable forest management.

The launch of the FSC Indigenous Foundation in 2016 further solidifies this commitment. This independent organization fosters collaboration between Indigenous movements and diverse partners, actively promoting the rights and self-development of Indigenous communities across Africa.

Recognizing the vital role of IFLs, FSC will be launching pilot projects in the Congo Basin this year. These projects aim to solidify IFL conservation efforts.

Sustainable plantation forestry: innovation key to protecting natural forests

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) promotes responsible plantation management to protect natural forests. While plantations can’t fully replicate the intricate ecosystems of natural forests, FSC certification ensures they are managed with environmental and social responsibility at the forefront.

FSC takes a firm stance against deforestation. Plantations established by replacing natural forests after 1994 are ineligible for certification. However, for plantations established on converted land between 1994 and 2020, FSC certification is possible, but only after demonstrably repairing any social and environmental damage caused by the conversion.

South Africa exemplifies responsible plantation management. With 80% of commercial plantations FSC-certified, these producers actively collaborate on biodiversity initiatives with WWF South Africa. Sappi, a leading forestry company, showcases this commitment through their Forestry Research Centre, developing climate-resilient and pest-resistant seedlings. These actions prove that responsible plantations can harmonize with environmental goals.

Concrete innovations

FSC’s dedication to innovation yields a bountiful harvest:

Accessibility for All: FSC tackles the limitations of cost and complexity through the SLIMF (Small and Low-Intensity Managed Forests) and the CIP (Continuous Improvement Procedure). These initiatives provide tailored requirements, making certification accessible to smaller producers.

Enhanced standards: From ensuring traceability through newly developed blockchain technology to incorporating Intact Forest Landscape (IFL) protection within standards, FSC continuously improves its practices.

Holistic forest management and adding value to forest: The Ecosystem Services Procedure fosters a more comprehensive approach to verified impacts associated with sustainable forest management. It allows forest managers to add more value to the forest they are managing via a range of services.

Court Orders Business-Woman Dorcas Joan Kiptoo Off Contested Karen Land

0

The High Court has extended orders stopping Businesswoman Dorcas Joan Kiptoo from interfering with a parcel of land situated in Karen that is worth Ksh.4.6 billion.
This is even as a new application has been filed in court seeking to have Kiptoo cited for contempt of court orders.

During Monday’s hearing before Justice Ogutu Mboya, the court was told that Kiptoo has disobeyed court orders issued on March 8, and that the respondents in the matter have gone ahead with fencing the property.

Similarly, the court was told that the police have failed to abide by orders and urged the court to hear the contempt application before hearing other matters.
”The last orders were very clear …the OCS Karen were to help in enforcement of the orders …they have failed to abide by those orders of the court …then the contempt application should be heard first …the contempt is continuing to fence off the land ,” court was told.

“They are protecting the person’s defendants. We are inviting the court to visit the land in dispute and then give directions and give orders,” court heard

In the application, Arvind Kanji Patel claims there is a willful and deliberate disobedience of the court order by Kiptoo, the Sub County Police Commandant, Karen and the OCS Karen Police station.

“…..that it is essential for the court to commit the contemnors to jail to compel obedience of the court order,” reads court papers.

The judge directed that the application be heard on May 6 this year and directed parties to file and serve their respective papers and submission within 7 days.

Fallen IGP Erinayo’s Family Files Trespass Case Seeking Energy Ministry Engineers’ Arrest Over Nwoya Land Deprivation

0

This news website has established that Police CID’s D/ASP Collins Turyakira, based at Central Police Station (CPS) of Nwoya district, has opened up several criminal investigations cases implicating Energy Ministry engineers working on the rural electrification programme in that part of Acholi.

The CID investigations, separately corroborated in greater detail by the Erinayo family lawyers in a separate letter or brief written to the Energy Ministry PS Irene Batebe and also copied to her boss Ruth Nankabirwa and the Attorney General Kiwanuka Kiryowa, are in response to numerous complaints which the vastly marginalized fallen IGP’s family and estate beneficiaries have been filing almost on a monthly basis. In some instances, they have directly implicated veteran UPDF Gen Otema Awanyi as one of those fermenting their family’s land deprivation-related aggrievement.

Gen Otema, renowned for taking no prisoners and generally overlooking the weak is his pursuit of personal selfish interests in much of Acholi sub region, happens to be an equally powerful neighbor in the same Nwoya district where the Erinayos own vast tracts of land. In the Tangi neighborhood alone, the Erinayo family owns up to more than 6,400 acres of arable land, according to their lawyer’s letter to the Energy Ministry.

In the investigations being conducted by the Police’s CID, whose operatives require backup from their Kampala headquarters to be able to overcome the powerful actors tormenting the fallen IGP’s family, the Erinayos for the start want two Energy Ministry engineers (namely Aron Lagu and Etyang) criminally prosecuted for enabling the ongoing trespass onto their land in Nwoya district where their large scale commercial agriculture activities are currently being constrained.

Represented by UK-based William Oryema and the relentless Nancy Wilson Oryema, the fallen IGP’s family claim that the criminal trespass on their land has cost the family a fortune as the Energy Ministry struggles to extend power lines from Karuma exclusively to Gen Otema’s 14 households located in Nwoya district’s Tangi village.

The family claims that in a bid to deliver or extend electricity for the exclusive enjoyment of people living in Gen Otema’s homes in Tangi village, the Energy Ministry engineers (closely working with the contracted rural electrification Chinese company CICO) inevitably passed power lines through the Erinayo estate land. That this has since enlarged to cover up to 7kms, a huge chunk which the family has subsequently been deprived of.

The two fearless Oryema siblings are specifically aggrieved that all this land has criminally been taken away from their Erinayo estate without the relevant valuation and compensation payment being undertaken as is mandatorily required under the laws of Uganda and more so the Constitution under Article 26.

They want the Energy Ministry officials concerned with the rural electrification program concerned with the Nwoya intervention to be criminally prosecuted for allegedly conniving to deprive the family of their land without the same being preceded with mandatory compensation.

In a brief media interview this Wednesday evening, Nancy Oryema implored the President and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) or even Parliament to quickly intervene and enforce equity and inclusiveness while rejecting the wisdom in the Energy Ministry’s decision to expend so much money extending rural electrification benefits to that part of Nwoya only for the benefit of the Otema family members with homes in Tangi village.

“This is simply unacceptable. They have cut down our indigenous trees and generally degraded our land without paying any compensation yet the rural electrification intervention being extended is purposed at benefiting only the Otema brothers,” Nancy Oryema, combative as always, asserted in the Wednesday media interview conducted at the locus in Nwoya.

She vowed to go down fighting as opposed to surrendering or merely looking on as her late father’s hard-earned property is being grabbed and encroached upon in connivance knowingly involving Energy Ministry officials who ought to be there for and serve all Ugandans equally.

Kinyara Golf Club Excels At The 2024 Rwenzori Open Golf Tournament

Kinyara Golf Club players at the 2024 Rwenzori Open Golf Tournament

By Joe Walusimbi

Christopher Basaliza (9) made one of the greatest golf plays you didn’t see, but it was only enough to stave off profound disappointment for other players at the 2024 Rwenzori Golf Open.

And when all was finished, the Kinyara Golf Team was on the right end of one of their better performances at the tournament, while Teams Tooro, Mbarara, Namulonge, Kasese, and Uganda Golf Clubs were left blinking.

Kinyara Golf Club Winners at the 2024 Rwenzori Open Golf Tournament

What happened in the late afternoon on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Fort Portal’s Tooro Golf Club is a lot to digest.

Christopher Basaliza (9), perhaps the Rwenzori Open Golf Tournament victor, tortured his golfing counterparts with the best game of his adult life.

Opponents Dennis Aguma (12) and Frank Kirungi (11) endured a defensive game plan concocted by arguably the most decorated Uganda’s golfing coaching staff at the time.

And the Kinyara Golf Club team members were flying across the Tooro region back to Masindi on Sunday, March 17, 2024, not only with five medals of any kind from the 2024 Rwenzori Open Golf tournament but also with pleasure after conquering groups A and B and also clinching the nearest to the pin golf award at the tournament.

Christopher Basaliza (9), beat teammate Dennis Aguma (12) by one stroke with a 65 net for Kinyara Golf Club to clinch a one-two for group A. Aguma Dennis (12) played 66 net on his comeback to competitive golf in 2024.

The group’s top 10 finishers also had veteran golfer Oketi Andrew (7) in the seventh position in Group A with a net of 72 strokes.

Simon Onadra (13) won group B with a net of 64 strokes, defeating Moses Toko (15), in another Kinyara Golf Club one-two. Moses Toko (15) finished second with 65 strokes in net.

The top 10 finishers included Wilfred Kushemererwa (13) with 66 net strokes in fourth, William Drapari (15) with 69 net strokes in fifth, and Godwin Okumu (17) with 70 net strokes in seventh.

But of all the twists and turns of the 2024 Rwenzori Open Golf competition, there were a total of 81 players, 17 from Kinyara Golf Club, who won five trophies.

Simon Ojobile (11) won the nearest to the pin award after wading off stiff competition from Moses Toko and Steven Baguma, all from Kinyara Golf Club, at hole number 15 at Tooro Golf Club.

Group C witnessed great performances from Kinyara Golf Club players too. Percy Mpuuga (30) played 68 net strokes in fourth position and was beaten on a countback. Stephen Oribi (19) played 69 net strokes in fifth position, while Collins Mukuru (33) played 70 net in ninth position.

In his first competitive golf tournament away from home, Godfrey Okot (47), Kinyara Golf Club’s youngest recruit, finished 11th in Group C with 71 strikes.

Christopher Basaliza (9) appreciated Kinyara Sugar Limited’s Corporate Communications, Aldon Walukamba, for having encouraged the team players on and off the course at the Tooro Golf Club.

“We thank our corporate communications manager and the management of Kinyara Sugar Limited for the support, trust, and recognition rendered to us golfers,” said Christopher Basaliza (9).

Moses Enzama, Kinyara Golf Captain, led the Kinyara Golf Club team to a successful competition for the second time at Tooro Club in 2024.

“It was the constant training of team members that yielded all these results in the past few months. We will continue training as we wait for other competitions this year,” Enzama said.

Three weeks ago, in February 2024, Henry Byaruhanga (12) won group A at the Tooro Club 2024 Venus Open with 63 strokes net, Charles Margach (17) came in as second runner-up in group B with 70 strokes net, and Aldon Walukamba (31) won group C with 64 net strikes at the 2024 Venus Open.

Kinyara Golf Club will host the inaugural Kabalega golf tournament in June 2024. This is the second golf competition at Kinyara Golf Course, having previously hosted the Kinyara Open Golf Tournament for the past 25 years.
