MOROTO: Over 400 patients have undergone specialized eyes operations at a medical camp held at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital. The free operation in the newly constructed Shs1.2billion facility by sight savors its currently on going and conducted by a team of Ugandan doctors led by Dr. Glades Atto.

Dr Atto speaking to this publication earlier this week said all the operations have been successful adding they will continue doing it daily depending on the availability of the patients.

She further explains that Cataract is a medical condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque and subsequently resulting in blurred vision
says it is one of the the major causes of blindness in humans, which is largely caused by ageing.

“Cataracts is so common in Karamoja especially among the elderly persons,” said Dr Atto.

Matine Odongo one of the Patients who had gone for screening says the establishment of the fully fledged unit for eye care was a great relief for the people of Karamoja and the neighboring districts.

Martine say the only place they would get eye treatment was in Tororo a distance of 280kilometers away from Moroto.

“It has not been easy for us to access these services because of the distance but we are happy that we are now getting it from Moroto,”Odongo says

While Jackson Lokut another patient appealed to government especially the ministry of health to make eye lenses to be available in the unit so that they don’t go far to access them. Grace Angolere and Clementine Nakut are some of the hundreds who have regained their sight after going through the operations.

Dr. Steven Pande the Moroto regional referral Hospital Director says the establishment of the first eye unit in the hospital has been of great significance to their eye-care and treatment services.

According to Dr Pande, the facility is fully equipped with modern equipment and other medical supplies from their partner Sight Savors.

“This facility costed about Shs1.2billion including the machines and it has wards for admitting male and female patients after the surgery for close monitoring, “says Dr Pande

Peter Sidong Sagambi the Deputy Chief administrative officer Moroto said the facility was a relief to people of Karamoja and the entire country and appealed the hospital management to make the proper use of the facility.

While Sentongo Musobozi the program officer Sight Savors Uganda said the choice of constructing a multi-billion eye facility in Moroto for entire Karamoja was after discovering that Karamoja region has higher cases of Cataracts  and trachea related diseases.

She says the sight savers team move around the communities  and do screen and that  those who require surgeries are transported to the facility.

Story By Steven Ariong

KARAMOJA: Director of Karamoja private sector promotion centre Jimmy Lomokol has assured government that Karamoja will continue depending on relief aid as long as the region still rely on the erratic rainfall.

Speaking to this website on Saturday  Lomokol said the only solution to end food shortage and hunger in Karamoja is by constructing an irrigation system that will cover the entre region.

According to Lomokol pulling water from lake Bisina in Katakwi to the tank on top of Mt Napak will distribute water to the entre Karamoja through out the year and people will massively cultivate food without fears of drying up.

“Karamija soil is so fertile but the only challenge is that it does not absorb water for long but if water is made available for agriculture, I can assure Karamoja can feed the entire country,”Lokomol advised.

Lomokol pointed out that that a lot of money is being used for building valley tanks which are not sustainable.

While Paul Lokol the district chairperson Nabilatuk district says hunger has taken drought as an advantage to kill people of Karamoja adding that if government could only construct an irrigation system, the region will be in position to grow food and feed on its people.

“What we have learnt as people of Karamoja is that some people in government are taking the situation that Karamoja people go through for their own benefits, because honestly if government was interested to find the last solution for the hunger in Karamoja it would have done irrigation system but because some people are using Karamoja as their eating plate it will take time for Karamoja to come out of hunger crisis,” Lokomol says.

Additionally, Francis Kiyonga the former district chairperson of Amudat said Karamoja region will continue experiencing hunger every year and people survive on NGO’s handouts as long there is no irrigation scheme to enable farmers to grow crops.

Last year Ecological Christians Organization (ECO) trained hundreds of farmers grow crops using small irrigation system.

Apparently most farmers who embraced the idea from the ECO are reaping from vegetable growing.

Requiem For Benedict XVI To Be Held In His Former German Archdiocese

0

By DPA

After the death of Josef Ratzinger, the late pope emeritus who took the name Benedict XVI, his former German archdiocese of Munich and Freising plans to bid him farewell with a requiem on Tuesday evening.

The former pontiff died on Saturday morning in the Vatican at the age of 95 after it emerged that his health had deteriorated.

German-born Benedict XVI was the head of the Catholic Church from 2005 to 2013, when, after just under eight years as pope, he voluntarily resigned, becoming the first pope to do so in hundreds of years.

He cited his frailty, saying he lacked the strength for such a demanding job. His resignation may ultimately pave the way for future pontiffs to resign due to poor health.

As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, he was archbishop of Munich and Freising from 1977 to 1982. The current incumbent, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, is expected to celebrate the service for his predecessor in Munich’s Cathedral of Our Lady, or Liebfrauendom.

According to diocesan information, a memorial site has also been set up there where people can commemorate the late pope emeritus. Such places also exist in Freising’s St Mary’s Cathedral and in the parish church of St Oswald in Traunstein, the church where Ratzinger celebrated his first Mass after his ordination in 1951.

Ratzinger’s time as archbishop has been overshadowed by accusations that he did not handle abuse cases appropriately. During his tenure, for example, a repeat offender priest was transferred from the western German state of North Rhine Westphalia to the Munich archdiocese, as emerged from the abuse report for the diocese presented just under a year ago.

Ratzinger denied accusations during his lifetime that he had known about the man’s crimes. The fact that he had to subsequently correct false statements that he had not attended a meeting dealing with the man made headlines worldwide.

Ratzinger’s role in dealing with the repeat offender is now also an issue for the judiciary. A civil action against Ratzinger is pending at the Traunstein Regional Court. An alleged victim of the priest, identified under German privacy laws as Priest H, has sued him and other responsible persons from the archdiocese. The plaintiff assumes that cases were covered up.

The proceedings will continue even after Ratzinger’s death, a court spokesperson confirmed on Monday. As soon as the former pope’s heirs are known, the case will be continued against them.

Benedict XVI is lying in state in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome after his death on New Year’s Eve. Funeral Masses are planned in several German dioceses.

His funeral service is set to take place in St Peter’s Square on Thursday morning, followed by the burial in the basilica.

In Germany, bells are due to be rung nationwide for the former pontiff in line with a recommendation from the Bishops’ Conference to the 27 Catholic dioceses.

Meanwhile, North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) has ordered mourning flags for all official buildings under the supervision of the state for the day.

Moses Lomuria another reformed rustlers on his side urged government to fulfill the pledge they made to the rustlers while asking for guns.

“Government promised us heaven on earth, we gave them guns but we are not seeing anything they promised to us which is bad,” Lomuria painfully lamented

Micheal Longole the Karamoja regional police spokesperson advised the reformed warriors to form and register their group so that government can extend support to them.

“The advantage is that most Karimojong are gifting in art and crafts how I wish they could explore its potential, they will earn money than rustling animals,” Longole advised

This comes at a time when Karamoja region has slightly registered decline of wave of insecurity that has paralyzed business in the region. The situation has calmed  down due to the heavy  presence of joint security personnel both police and army doing routine patrolling in Karamoja.

“They cut down trees massively for charcoal burning without rethinking of their lives ahead,” noted RDC Ayo.

She has further vowed to end charcoal burning in the district using a presidential directive which was recently issued to all the RDCs across the county on the need to protect the environment noting that some leaders were supporting the cutting down of trees but warned them the law under Environmental act will punish them.

Paul Lokol the district chairperson Nabilatuk district urged government to come up with vital  projects that can help to pull out the masses from charcoal burning.

“We all dont support cutting down trees because it affects soil fertility but then most households survive on charcoal burning which we request government  to come up with projects that can help these disgruntled groups,” he advised.

Lokol says they are arranging to start mass sensitization to the community to appreciate the importance of protecting the environment noting that people supporting charcoal burning come from outside Karamoja. Lokol also advised government to reduce the price of gas and electricity to reduce the pressure on cutting down trees for charcoal.
