OWEYEGHA-AFUNADUULA: Does One Have To Have A Degree In Order To Be A Scientist? The Case Of Uganda.

It is true. Life is about nothing but influence and change. If you cannot influence anything or contribute to change then you are just a sojourner who would be best if not brought into the world. And one can influence and bring about change at any level of society. One need not be a politician to be of influence or be a change agent.

One of the greatest tragedies of the colonial education system we inherited from our former colonizers – the English – was that a degree was the ultimate acquisition for someone who wanted to be a success story in life. The assumption was that without a degree one would be of no use in or to society. But this was false. At independence in 1962, most of our post-colonial leaders in Africa had no degrees. They included Apollo Milton Obote of Uganda to whom the colonialists handed the instruments of power. They performed far better in terms of influencing towards change forwards rather than backwards compared to our “degreed” people of power today.

Our current people of power in Uganda, for reasons best known to themselves, have decided to separate the sciences (i.e., the natural sciences, the humanities or arts and the social sciences) further, ostensibly to power the country into a new science and technology mode in the 21st Century. I have already written an article on the Politics of Pure Science in Uganda. So, I will not go back to articulating the dangers of emphasizing boundaries in science knowledge and application of science knowledge in influencing and’or changing society to new levels of achievement in development, transformation and progress. What I want to write about is: Does a degree make one a good or effective scientist as an influencer and change agent?

Let me answer the question I have set myself. No. God, the First Scientist, was not a certified scientist. History has recorded many scientists who never had degrees.

When Galileo Galilei made his scientific discoveries in the Renaissance in Europe, he had no degree.  There are many renowned scientists after Galileo Galilei who contributed greatly to the scientific and technological revolution in Europe in particular and the World in general but were never certified as degreed scientists. Besides, there are many good scientists who embarked on degree courses but never completed them. Nevertheless, they remained excellent scientists. It is also possible that many scientists remained active in science, obtained their degrees but were not good enough compared to some who never got degrees because they dropped out of their degree programmes for various reasons. Others turned out to be great scientists in the natural sciences despite having obtained degrees in either the humanities or the social sciences.

Apart from Galileo Galilei who did so much for the scientific and technological revolution before he had a degree, there are many others who did. I hope when I mention some it will arouse your curiosity and help you change your mind about who a good and efficient scientist is. Possibly you will stop judging a scientist using the grade of his or her degree as the yardstick and even start asking: what went wrong with the human mind. Apparently many scientists today are more theoretical than practical and just reproduce the theories of others like was the case when Galileo Galilei came on the scientific scene.

Let me start with those mentioned by Francis Hooton in his article “Don’t Judge a Scientist by their Degree Grade” published in the Biologist, a publication of The Royal Society of Biology. He mentioned three Copley Medal winners: Michael Faraday, who only did apprenticeship and had no degree; Charles Darwin who had an ordinary degree in Theology and no degree in any scientific discipline; and James Prescott Joule, who had no degree.  Michael Faraday  was an English scientist who contributed to the study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His main discoveries include the principles underlying electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis. Charles Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist and biologist, widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. James Joules was an English physicist, mathematician and brewer, born in Salford, Lancashire. Joule studied the nature of heat. He published widely.

The list of famous scientists who had no degrees is inexhaustible. JamesAConrad.com gives a long list of famous scientists who never had degrees. It includes:

  • Richard Leakey, a Kenyan-born archaeologist
  • Robert Evans, an Australian-born astronomer
  • Stephen Felton, American-born paleontologist or fossilist
  • Vladimar Nabokov, entomologist (insect researcher)
  • Henrietta Swan Leavitt, astronomer
  • Reginald Hooley, paleontologist, fossilist
  • V. Michurin, Horticulturist, Botanical geneticist
  • Thomas Edison, once described as the greatest inventor of all time, an inventor, who held electrical, mechanical and chemical patents.
  • Gregor Mendel, first geneticist, naturalist, botanist, the father of modern genetics
  • Thomas Henry Huxley, biologist, anatomist
  • Henry David Thoreau, naturalist
  • William Fox, Paleontologist
  • William Darwin Fox, Naturalist, entomologist (insect researcher)
  • Charles Goodyear, Chemist, discoverer of the process of vulcanizing rubber
  • Mary Anning, Paleontologist
  • Mary Somerville, mathematician, astronomer and science writer
  • Caroline Herschell, astronomer and discoverer of Planet Uranus
  • Benjamin Franklin, physicist, inventor and America’s first scientist
  • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, first microbiologist, Father of Microbiology
  • Leonardo da Vinci, Mathematician, engineer, anatomist, geologist, botanist, inventor and artist (many things in one)

To these we can add Annie Jump Cannon, an influential astronomer who lacked formal education in astronomy, created the Havard Classification System. And whose work led to the discovery of 300,000 stars; Nikola Testa, an electrical Engineer whose work revolutionized the field of electrical engineering; Alfred Russell Wallace,  a British naturalist who was the real father of the Theory of Natural Selection, and carried out studies in animal behaviour and biogeography, although he lacked formal education in biology; Micheal Ventris, a British architect who also became a renowned linguist; James Clerk Maxwell, a Scotsh Physicist whose work paved the way for the development of modern technologies like radio, television, and radar, and also made important contributions to the understanding of color vision, the kinetic theory of gases, and thermodynamics; Humphrey Davy, a renowned British  Chemist who made several groundbreaking discoveries, including the isolation of chemical elements such as potassium, sodium, barium, calcium, and magnesium; Benjamin Thompson, a British physicist who without any formal education  a physicist and inventor who made remarkable advancements in the field of thermodynamics; James Priestley described as a a remarkable polymath who left a significant mark in various fields and whose discovery of oxygen is considered one of the most significant contributions to science; James Croll, a self-taught scientist who earned many honours.

I can, therefore, state without hesitation that not being formally educated is not necessarily inability to think correctly and productively. Unfortunately, in Africa in general and Uganda in particular we despise those who have not got formal education as inconsequential. In Uganda, there is now an uninformed policy of promoting certified education at degree level. We have even set an ultimatum fro teachers in primary and secondary education for anyone who has no degree to have acquired them within six years. If not they not to expect to continue teaching in Ugandan schools. We have made the degree as the beginning and end of everything towards 2050.

As I have tried to show, in the past creativity and innovation did not require degrees. It is hard to understand why today we think that the only creative and innovative people in science and other fields of knowledge are those with degrees. We have destroyed creativity and innovation in traditional societies where the creativity and innovation used to preside. We are destroying the environment, which was where creativity and innovation occurred. We are eroding the biocultural diversity which was the outdoor laboratory for people like Wallace and Darwin. We are falsely convinced that real creativity and innovation must occur only in the laboratories of the natural sciences. We think there is no creativity and innovation in the humanities and social sciences and that natural science do not need social sciences and the humanities to innovate and create.

What all this means is that we do recognize that real science does not reside in laboratories but among people and their communities or between the boundaries of the disciplines and or the territories of knowledge. We don’t think and believe that creativity and innovation can come from anywhere if we allow people to think and analyse phenomena critically from any station in life, whether they are men, women or children. It is true. The Creator and First Scientist, God, gave each of us freedom to use the brains in our heads to create and innovate. One writer said he gave each of us 75% of his thinking capacities and retained the other 25%. So, each of us has the human potential to create and innovate. All we need are the right environments and the right policies of education, teaching, learning and research, or else the right  science and technology choices.

An education system that encourages more and more fragmentation of knowledge into small pockets of knowledge within non-interacting academic territories of natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and regards degreed education as the only education, will not nurture new versatile scientists and thinkers of the Leonardo da Vinci type. We have to reintegrate knowledge and truth, and, more important, de-fragment knowledge and truth.

The Executive Director of Mbarara Referral Hospital Dr Celestine Barigye has tasked Mbarara City authorities to work towards attaining the cemetery.

Unveiling the hospital’s milestones and challenges to the media at his residence in Bushenyi, Dr Barigye sought to understand how cities can progress without places where people can be decently buried.

According to Dr Barigye world over, cemeteries are recognized places and should be well preserved. The outspoken Director’s comments come at the backdrop when Mbarara City’s land of the dead was encroached upon.

Halson Kagure, the Mbarara Referral Hospital Public Relations Officer said that the land which was claimed is where the hospital buries unclaimed bodies. However , Kagure trashed allegations that since cemetery’s encroachment Mbarara Referral Hospital has been stranded with unclaimed bodies.

Nevertheless, the Hospital Director who is also the regional director of health services promised to meet with city authorities to forge the way forward. On the other hand, Dr Barigye shed light on the increasing number of super specialized services at the hospital coupled with recent accreditation of the Clinical laboratory.

This, he said will boost the incoming of foreign and regional clients termed as medical tourism.

Some of the reputable services at MRRH include neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, pediatric and adult oncology, MRI investigation among others.

It’s said that on a daily basis the hospital can attract as more as over 1000 clients given the fact that her it extends beyond the catchment area. But, the hospital is overstretched as it operates just like any other regional referral hospital which is unrealistic.

In the last financial year, MRRH took the country by storm when it emerged number two after Mulago National Referral Hospital in terms of conducting surgeries. Dr Barigye mentioned that they are looking forward to engaging government to upgrade the hospital .

The hospital has also been performing well in HIV/AIDS management following the attainment of 99% of viral load suppression due to the support from the American People through USAID Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Strengthening Activity .

But, Dr Barigye encouraged the people to keep taking their drugs ‘religiously’ besides underscoring traditional and new measures put in place to stop the spread of HIV pandemic. It should be recalled that Mbarara is on spotlight for registering more cases of HIV which puts it in second position after Fort portal.

The Hospital Director further highlighted the construction of a regional incinerator at Bushenyi Mbarara highway to deal with the challenge of wanting waste management in the region. The hospital management also committed to open the upper gate whose construction delays have somewhat hampered movements.

On a lighter note, Dr Barigye and family commended religious leaders which among others include Archbishop Lambert Bainomugisha of Nyamitanga Archdiocese, Rt Rev Associate Professor Sheldon Mwesigwa of Ankole, Bishop Twinomujuni Johnson of West Ankole, Bishop Nathan Ahimbisibwe of South Ankore and Pastor Robert Kayanja, the founder and senior pastor of the Miracle Center Cathedral for keeping him in their prayers during the time when he was sick.

He and family also thanked the work done by Pastor Jessica Kayanja of organizing all prayers.

Nebbi Bishop Denounces Corrupt Leaders

0
By Mike Rwothomio and Lee Ofoymungu
In Uganda, news about leaders swindling resources meant for the common man has become normal. Corruption as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain erodes trust, weakens democracy, hampers economic development, exacerbates inequality, poverty, social division and the environmental crisis.
Corruption continue relentlessly  notwithstanding the government’s effort in ensuring it’s populace benefit from services being provided out of the tax payer   hard earned cash. A recent survey conducted by inspectorate of Government indicates that annually, Uganda loses 20 trillion shillings through corruption.
In greater Nebbi, media has always been flooded with reports about leaders stealing drugs from Public health Facilities, swindling or diverting  funds meant for the public, failing to account for projects, exaggerating figures amongst others.

In his Christmas Message at Stephen Cathedral Goli on December 25, The Bishop of Nebbi church of Uganda Rt Rev Pons Ozelle Awinju  denounced  rampant corruption amongst leaders adding that it is setting back development in the area.

He  said Government of Uganda is doing it’s best to steer the country’s economy full speed ahead but the rooted corruption amongst leaders  is to blame for the setbacks.
The Bishop who visited Asian Country of  Singapore recently  pegged  the souring, flying and progressing  economy of  that  country with only 5 million people to  zero corruption. The Asian nation of  Singapore gained it’s independence in 1965, three years after Uganda’s independence from the British rule.
He therefore calls  for mindset change amongst leaders in the area such that Alur Sub-region  and the entire nation can develop with effect from next year.
The woman MP of Nebbi district Agnes Acibu  during a Thanksgiving prayers for Nebbi District local government last week at Nebbi District headquarters said “we  should have  the people we  serve at heart in execution of our duties”.
She also called for better coordination  between leaders from District to local level to champion prosperity and development in Nebbi. According to activists , Exposing corruption and holding the corrupt to account can only happen if everyone  understand the way corruption works and the systems that enable it.
This year, a peculiar move by government of Uganda has seen the movers and shakers in the country including ministers tasting prison life after they were implicated in the Karamoja Iron sheets scandal.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in his string of speeches has been vociferous against corruption by leaders. Most Ugandan  political and economic analysts attributes the country’s staggering and bulging public debt to deep seated corruption by leaders.
Michael Atingi-Ego, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda told Parliament that as of August 2023, provisional data indicates that total debt stock stood at staggering UGX88.807tn, representing a 2.8% increase compared to June 2023, with the rise in debt primarily driven by a 19.1% increase in domestic debt.

TOP STORY: Famous East African President Says Homosexuals Should Be ‘Stoned To Death’

0

Uganda this year 2023 re-introduced the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 which president has since signed into law and despite external pressure to not make it law on the land. Andrew Mwenda and Fox Odoi along side some other individuals ran to the constitutional court to have the law quashed like they did in 2014.

Court has heard their submissions together with those of the respondents who are the Attorney General and Pastor Martin Sempa and the court bench led by deputy Chief Justice Richard Butera will soon give a verdict on whether it stays put or repeat what it did in 2014 if t finds loopholes in the law that the west has described as harsh and bad.

President Museveni whose is government is already facing the consequences of passing the law like suspension of the World bank funding to Uganda, suspension from America’s lucrative AGOA forum, travel restrictions imposed to some government bosses notably prison chief Johnson Byabashaija among other punishments in the offing as a result of trying to save the institution of marriage, the culture and norms remains strong on his stance for homosexuality.

Through several agencies, several western countries including the US, German, Britain, Belgium, Sweden among others support several government projects of Education, Defence, Agriculture, Health among others not only in Uganda and across the continent and in turn, these want African countries to dance to their tunes of welcoming and accepting things like homosexuality in the name of human rights which many Africans deem wrong.

In the news, another East African president has suggested that homosexuals in his country should be arraigned in a stadium and stoned to death. This president who is an adent catholic faithful says powerful nations in the west should keep their aid if it comes with an obligation to give rights to homosexuals.

President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi who was responding to a reporter’s questions about external pressure from Western countries for LGBT rights to be respected at a press conference used a Bible reference to say that God was opposed to homosexuality adding that it was no longer an issue in his country Burundi.

“If you want to choose Satan now go nd live those countries [in the west] and I think those who strive to go there want to acquire those habits, they should remain there and never bring them to us”- the president said

In Burundi homosexual is illegal ad punishable to almost two years in jail unlike and several of the LGBTQ people have been convicted and served their sentence. The vice is disallowed in more than 30 African countries who have remained determined to preserve their culture.

“For me, I think that if we find these people in Burundi they should be taken to stadiums and be stoned, and doing so would not be a crime”- he said before suggesting that homosexuality was like choosing between Satan and God.
