PAUL MUGOYA: Tribute To All Bugisu Cooperative Union Elders And Farmers

0

BCU is among agricultural federations of Unions, established in 1954 by small holder coffee farmers led by the late Samson Kitutu. Before BCU, there was Bugisu Coffee Scheme, that acted as an umbrella of loose Unions. The sole purpose of establishing BCU was to bring small holder farmers together and have a stronger bargain power for their coffee to get better prices by getting rid of middlemen who were ripping off big profits from farmers.

As a result farmers organized themselves at farm gate levels to form Growers Cooperative Societies which registered to become members of the Union by buying shares in BCU. At that time, the laws that governed Cooperatives gave much powers to the government Register of Cooperatives that had sweeping powers to interfere in the operations of the running of Societies but fortunately at that time government left some space for the Unions to operate their businesses.

The space was monopoly. They were given the monopoly to export until 1969 when government came in and did the marketing by itself by establishing the Coffee Marketing Board, CMB. This was a form of government interference to control and influence the running of the Union purposely to politicize the operations of the Union to objectively to control proceeds from the sales of coffee to tap on the foreign currency.

Then again recently in came the liberalization policy in the NRM where BCU lost the monopoly. Then came in the liberalization policy that brought in competitors who have no heart to preserve the name of Bugisu Arabic coffee have instead steadily negatively affected the quality of our coffee. This has distorted the brand of Bugisu Arabica. The law does not protect the product and quality of Bugisu Arabica.

There is need to legislate by- laws and laws to protect our coffee. Today, any player who has acquired a license is allowed to trade. Regulations are very weak. This has adversely affected the original aroma and the special taste of our coffee.

Because there are some competitors who do not mind to stick to observe the specific guidelines of processing coffee, starting at the farm gate. There is a big contrast on quality at the time of monopoly and the time of liberalization. Policies, if awkwardly embraced can affect a produce or a product.

Quality: If government wants draw and attract more money from the coffee earnings in foreign markets, it should avoid going full blast on the new changes on economic policies. It should be mindful and instead be protective of the quality of national cash crops so that both producers and government can make maximum returns in profits.

Coffee Stabilization Fund:
This is a Fund where when coffee prices have soared, government can put aside some money to compensate farmers when losses occur. This is to government of Uganda notably UCDA. Where is this money? Uganda farmers are demanding to know. They need an explanation.

BCU Warehouses In Mombasa: What happened to farmers warehouses that are in Mombasa that were taken over by Uganda Up Holdings, a government subsidiary without compensation ? Can government explain.

Tribute: I take this humble opportunity to thank all Elders who successfully participated in the struggle of saving BCU from being sold, this has made BCU an outstanding Union in Bugisu and the country at large. BCU has withstood against all odds that include tides and waves.

I wish to appreciate my colleagues who relentlessly fought and remained resilient to protect the Union, especially our colleagues who passed away notably, mzee the late Bishop Mudonyi, the late Muliro, the late Wabomba, DC and the late Masaba, may their souls RIP and to those who are now struggling with sickness. I would like to extend my special thanks to our lawyers Counsel Charles Gyabi and Wandera Ogalo for the good work done.

Special thanks go to all coffee farmers in all zones for the support and well deserved special thanks to our Patron who facilitated the struggle all the way through, Hon. Nandala Mafabi and finally to His Excellency the President of Uganda, Gen. Y.K Museveni for being receptive twice when we met him at State House on December 4th, 2014 and on November 3rd, 2015 respectively. God bless all. Wele alinde.

Reverend Vicky Ecipu Expresses Concern Over Disunity Among Leaders

Rev Vicky asking unity from leaders

By Emmanuel Akol

The Rev Vicky Ecipu, Reverend of St Paul Church of Uganda in Katakwi, has expressed concern over the disunity factor towards the leaders of Teso. She made this during an exclusive interview with our report on Sunday at St. Paul church of Uganda.

According to Reverend Ecipu, disunity among the leaders in Teso has brought a big gap towards service delivery among them.

“Most of the people in the districts have been left behind from developmental matters because a number of them are focusing on un valuable things like playing Luddo, Cards, Gamboling and drunkenness” she said.

This is an indication that they might cause havoc in the near future, considering that most of them have not changed their mindset towards development.

The cleric’s comments come at a time when in the wee hours of last week youth staged at Abela rock point called ACOMAI and stoned players who were coming back from their football match which left all the mirrors of the Taxis destroyed.

She cautions leaders to desist from buying un profitable things to youth i.e Aluddo, Mwezo but set up possible ways of changing their mindset.

However the Resident district commissioner Katakwi Rt. Maj Godfrey Katamba condemned the act and warned the youth to desist from leprosy manners and focus on poverty eradication in their households.

“As security head in the district, we have already deployed all the security agencies in the district in order to curb vice during and after festive season” RDC added.

Katamba who was ferrous during an interview with our reporter assured the Katakwi district peace and security and warned the wrong elements to desist from unlawful acts or less they will face rough.

These are also reported to have made away with 6 goats and un identified number of cows in the attack that happened in the early morning hours of today 26th December 2023. Speaking about the incident of last week that left 10 people dead, president Museveni ordered the UPDF to re-activate the Local Defense Unit (LDU) in the area to heighten up the security after people abandoned their homes in fear of the ruthless rebels who have made several attacks on Uganda this year.

Almost using the same style of attacks since the Kichwamba Technical college incident of 8th June 1998 where they burnt students in their hostels, ADF has this year made several attacks in the western parts of Uganda. They attacked a school in Lhubiriha in May this year killing over 40 and abducted a yet to be known number of students. They then attacked a truck carrying onions in Mpondwe, burnt it nd killed it’s occupants, these also attacked tourists in Queen Elizabeth National park leaving the newly English wed couple and their driver dead and burnt their car to ashes, they attacked another village in Kamwenge last week leaving 10 people dead.

UPDF is in Congo alongside the Congolese army since 2021 fighting with the Allied Democratic forces who have occupied and terrorized the area since the early 90s. Their founder and commander Jamil Mukulu remains incarcerated in Luzira prison after having been arrested in Tanzania in 2015, he’s yet to be arraigned in court to face trial.

OWEYEGHA-AFUNADUULA: Have Popes Been Prone To Being Anti-God

0

By Oweyegha-Afunaduula
December 25 is the date that the Catholic Church chose as the day of birth of Jesus Christ. It does not matter. What matters is that he was born for the purpose of saving us from our sins and connecting us with our Creator God. Whoever acknowledges Jesus Christ automatically acknowledges God and whoever acknowledges God acknowledges Jesus Christ as the savour and bridge between humanity and God.

As my commemoration of this day, let me write this article. I am writing it a few days after Pope Francis issued a new rule directing Priests, Bishops and Cardinals to bless homosexuals in their churches, and may be forgive their sins. As far as God is concerned, he is very clear in his Word. He condemns homosexuality and even destroyed the homosexuals of two cities – Gomorrah and Sodom – in biblical times.

As far as the Catholic Church is concerned Pope is not just the spiritual, ethical and moral leader but also the link between the Church and Jesus Christ. However, the papacy has not always been led by Popes that completely surrender to the supremacy of God or his Word, the Bible. It was this that compelled me 11 months ago to write an article titled “Are Popes Always Right?”

Pope Francis had more or less depicted a soft spot for homosexuality. Yet in the Book of Timothy 1:10 homosexuals are included among the ungodly and sinners, or the lawless and rebellious, the others being those who kill their fathers and mothers, and the murderers, kidnappers, liars, perjurers and whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching of God. It is the role of the Church to turn humanity away from ungodliness, sinful lives, unholiness and profanity.

There is no doubt that homosexuality is ungodly, sinful, unholy, profane and rebellion against God.
If you bless them instead of dissuading them from their ungodliness, sinfulness, unholiness and profanity, then you are endorsing their behaviour and acts against God. You become an anti-God. You fail the mission of the Church. You participate in the demise of God’s Church.

When Pope Francis depicted his soft spot for homosexuality, the Church struggled to convince the world that the Pope had been misquoted and what he said misinterpreted. Many followers and non-followers of the Church thought something was fishy with the Papacy in Rome.

When the Archbishop of Canterbury tried to coerce protestant churches to endorse homosexuality, and perform holy communion and holy marriages for them, the Church of Uganda and other churches around the world, decided to break away from Canterbury rather than do the abominable.

Even this time round many priests, bishops and cardinals of the Catholic Church have resisted the Pope’s new rule that they bless homosexuals. The resistance has been phenomenal. Resistant church workers are universally distributed and are to be found in Africa, Europe, the Americas Asia and Australasia. Countries such as Germany, Britain and USA, which had legalized what they called same-sex marriages have Bishops that have said No to the Pope.

Interestingly, in March 2011, a papal statement ruled against the church blessing same sex unions saying God cannot bless such abnormality.

When I read E.R. Chamberlain’s(2020) “The Bad Pope” I got the explanation that during 6 centuries the papal monarchy rose to its greatest heights as popes attempted to assert not only their spiritual authority but also their temporal power, only for it to come down crushing down like the Tower of Babel.

My Thesis Statement for this article is that Popes have always been prone to being anti-God. Being anti-God is engaging in behaviours and action that God cannot approve of according to his Word.

Today, the global media are awash with reports that Pope Francis approved a new papal rule, which allows priests to bless same-sex couples. If true, then it casts the Pope among “The Bad Popes” if the phrase “Bad Popes” means anti-God Popes. Indeed, the Catholic Church has been led by some Popes that contradicted the mission of the Church: turning humanity away from ungodliness, sinful lives, unholiness and profanity to Gord. On April 15 2018 Drew Kann of CNN gave a list of 8 of the worst Popes in the history of the Catholic Church. If we take Pope Francis as a pro-homosexuality Pope, then we can add him to the list of the worst Popes to make the total number 9 instead of 8 worst Popes.

The worst Popes mentioned by Drew Kann are the following:

Pope Alexander VI. This reigned between 1492 and 1503. He was a wealthy fellow who used bribery to capture the Papal throne. He killed some Cardinals who opposed him and even fathered children. Pope Stephen VI. This was in Papal power between 896 and 897. He was so bad that he exhumed the body of his predecessor – Formosus – and put it on trial.

He ordered that the body be dragged through the streets of Rome the same way the Guerillas of Somalia dragged 18 bodies of slain US soldiers through the streets of Mogadishu some years back in the history of global human conflict. Pope Stephen dumped the body of his predecessor in River Tiber.

Pope Boniface VIII. This occupied the Papal throne from 1294 to 1303. He was always a combative Pope. He was an openly political Pope who place all the armies of Europe under his supreme command. King Phillip got rid of him. Otherwise, he showed the very thin boundary between religion and politics.

Pope Urban VI occupied the Papal throne between 1378 and 1399, During his reign there were three competing Popes. He was a violent Pope who used violence to maintain and sustain his Papacy. He murdered many Cardinals who did not support his Papacy.

Pope Leo X. He reigned between 1513 and 1521. He was a devout supporter of the Renaissance in Europe. He used Church resources to fund some of the most famous artworks. This made the Church to be come bankrupt. To recoup some money for the Church he introduced the practice of people paying for forgiveness of their sins. This is one of the practices of the Church that angered Professor Martin Luther, forcing him to break away from the Catholic Church and forming the Protestant Church.

Pope John XII. He reigned between 955 and 964. This made history when he became Pope at the age of 18. He was a renowned womanizer who died when he got a stroke while eloping with a man’s wife. Pope Benedict IX. He reigned between 1032 and 1044. Other Popes and Cardinals described him as “The Demon from Hell”. He became Pope three times. He sold the papacy to his godfather, Pope Gregory VI, and reclaimed it from him. He loved papal power more than God or Jesus Christ.

Pope Sergius III. He reigned between 904 and 911. He declared others who wanted to be Popes as “The Anti-Popes” and had one of them killed. Therefore, if we are to answer the question “Have Popes always been prone to being anti-God?” the answer would be yes. It would not be surprising that Pope Francis, with his Pro-homosexual stance, would be the latest inclusion in the chain of anti-God Popes. The question we should ask is : What is the long-term consequence of his pro-homosexual stance on the Church?

When I visited Bonn, in Germany, in the very early millennium, I found many churches were not functioning anymore. Many were under lock and key. One Catholic Church built in 1252 was no longer functioning as a church but as a tourist church in which young and old were making love. I was not so observant to note that some of the lovers were same-sex lovers.

If in history there were three people claiming to be Popes, what would prevent in this era homosexuals claiming their own Pope, and the rest having their own Pope. Already Priests, Bishops and Cardinals who do not agree with Pope Francis on the issue of homosexuals feel let down by the Papacy. I would not be surprised if they combined their spiritual and moral forces to erect a Pope who is not anti-God and would provide the church with the spiritual and moral leadership to counter the penetration of the church by the homosexual momentum

All indications are that the papal crusade for homosexuals is likely to wreck the Catholic Church well in the future. For example, the African Catholic Church is not yet soft on homosexuality. It is likely to become even more rigid if it collectively perceives homosexuality as a new form of colonialism from the West. It will be remembered that when Europeans brought Catholicism and Protestantism to Africa, they fronted the Bible as an evangelizing tool yet the aim was to soften the ground for exploitation of the resources of Africa.

The Anglo-American Axis has a soft spot for homosexuality, and now seems to be using the Catholic Church and the Protestant Church to repenetrate the Continent with a new faith of homosexuality! Will it succeed this time round when there is also talk of depopulating the Earth by people who profess being Christians? The first impressions Africans get is that it is our Continent being targeted by depopulationists. All this reflects moral, ethical and spiritual decay being mediated by a new unity between the church and politics.

The question is: Will God allow the new faith of homosexuality to override his own faith that is pro-heterosexuality for the sole purpose of perpetuation of the human species well in the future for his Glory?

NARO Scores Huge Success In Agriculture Research Project

The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) has achieved remarkable success through a project aimed at promoting the use and commercialization of improved crop varieties and livestock technologies. The USAID-funded initiative, known as the Feed the Future Uganda Agriculture Research Activity, was designed to facilitate the release and commercialization of varieties developed in past and current research efforts. It also aimed to enhance crop and animal production and management technologies in response to emerging threats and market demands.

Dr. Yona Baguma

The project sought to consolidate previous gains in institutional and human capacity development, aligning research with market needs, and mobilizing domestic resources to replace development partner funding.

During a presentation to NARO’s Top Management, Project Coordinator Abdullah Kaggwa revealed that since 2020, the project had facilitated the release of eight new improved crop varieties. These included two bean varieties (NAROBEAN 6 and 7), two potato varieties (NAROPOT 5 and 6), two sweet potato varieties (NAROSPOT 6 and 7O), one provitamin A maize variety (NAROMAIZE 63PVA), and one pasture variety with high protein content (NAROLABLAB1). Additionally, eighteen candidate crop varieties were submitted to the National Variety Release Committee for approval.

NARO Bean

NARO research scientists also developed coffee value-added products, such as coffee facial and body scrub, ready for uptake by Uganda’s leading cosmetic producer, Movit Products Limited. Ebenezer, a private company based in Lira, was incubated for the promotion and dissemination of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) technologies.

Coffee facial and body scrub

In a positive development for banana farmers, Kaggwa announced that scientists had developed and continued to improve 12 value-added product prototypes. These included products from banana fiber, such as Banana green resistant starch, hair extensions, and sanitary pads. Other prototypes encompassed natural colorants and dyes, pre-cooked beans, composite flour (super kawomera), two specialty coffee powers, coffee-infused yogurt, coffee lotions and cream formulations, sorghum composite flour, and essential oils serving as low-risk pesticides.

Over the same project period, NARO developed five drudgery-reducing technologies, including a banana fiber extractor, two bean planters (heavy and light duty), and two animal-drawn planters.

Body cream

Regarding the commercialization of improved technologies and products, NARO formalized engagement with 14 private sector entities, including UBL, NBL, Coca-Cola Company, SAWA, Texfad, Doctors Choice, Nature Fusions, Technology for Tomorrow, Nutreal, Movit, SOSPPA, Jesa Farm Dairy, Psalms, and Munyegera Agro-machinery, for joint product development. Additionally, eight partnerships were facilitated between NARO and various entities for technology dissemination, promotion, and commercialization.

In terms of variety licensing, the project streamlined agreements between NARO and 13 seed companies, resulting in the licensing of over 77 crop varieties. This effort generated over UGX 730,000,000 in commitment fees and royalties.

Under the same project, various facilities were constructed or refurbished to enable the development of market-responsive technologies. These included an aeroponic unit, coffee seed multiplication facilities, a maize cold room, installation of laboratory and semi-industrial incubation equipment, virtual conferencing facilities, and the training of NARO staff in various academic fields.

In his remarks, NARO Director General Dr. Yona Baguma commended his team for the significant success demonstrated by the varieties released under his stewardship. He announced plans to mainstream the commercialization of developed technologies to enhance revenue generation and proposed an annual technology and innovation expo to showcase products, services, and new developments in the agricultural research field.

Dr. Baguma also pledged to strengthen NARO Holdings Limited, the organization’s business arm, in terms of personnel and governance to effectively enhance and accelerate last-mile access to and utilization of proven NARO technologies and services on a commercial and sustainable basis. He expressed optimism about achieving more in the anticipated second phase of the project, with a focus on addressing identified gaps.

VIDEO: New Details Reveal How ‘Commander’ Sobi Met His Brutal Death

0

Famous criminal and notorious robber Paddy Serunjoji alias Sobi died under brutal circumstances early this week as he commanded a group of youths he picked from Kisenyi Kampala to guard a contested piece of land in Madu sub-county in Gomba district.

The incident took place Monday afternoon in Kibaale village, Kigumba parish, Maddu sub-county, Gomba district as residents armed with stones, machetes and sticks hacked him to death together with other two youths whom he was commanding accusing him of forcefully acquiring land.

Confirming Sobi’s death late in the evening of Monday this week, Katonga police spokesperson SP Majib Karim note the challenges in obtaining accurate details surrounding the incident. Unconfirmed reports which have also been revealed in a video we have attached in this story hint at multiple causalities though only Sobi was officially confirmed being a famous figure.

“Preliminary findings suggest that around 12:30p today, on a land belonging to Kalisa in Kibale vllage, Kigumba parish, Madu sub-county, Gomba district, a group of 50 people armed with sticks, pangas and spears attacked another group, resulting in the death of one person,”-SP Karim said

The dispute revolved around land owned by one Kalisa, purchased in 2007 for shillings 100 million, with an outstanding balance of Shs80millio left unpaid by Kalisa after the demie of the seller, Paul Kibi. Allegedly hired by Kalisa to protect the disputed land, Sobi’s group destroyed crops on the land, sparking tension with Kibi’s children, Deborah Nagadya and Bartin Kiwewa, presenting a legitimate title deed that Kalisa had not settled the balance for.

For starters, Sobi was a renowned armed Robber who confessed on Camera that he kills people while executing his theft missions under his gang dubbed Kifesi. He would later be recruited in the security circles especially the Internal Security Organization (ISO) under state house and would sometimes be seen with guns. His long time friend Bobi Wine accuses him of being used to abduct over 50 NUP supporters of which some were returned while some went journeys of no return.

Police has since arrested several people to answer questions regarding Sobi’s death. He was laid to rest on Wednesday amidst protests from Family members who cursed the church for refusing to hold send off prayers for their loved one.

In the video below, a young man who was part of the gang that Sobi was leading on the fateful day recounts the attack that claimed the life of their boss ‘commander Sobi’.

JOSHUA KATO: Starting a Small Business in the face of Economic Challenges

0

By Joshua Kato

Starting a business is hard work in any environment, and doing so in the midst of economic challenges requires an extra level of determination and strategic thinking. While economic uncertainties may seem scary, they also present opportunities for innovation, resilience, and adaptability. If you are thinking of becoming an entrepreneur, consider the following tips for successfully building your business in a challenging economy. The small business survival rate is two-thirds surviving in the first two years and 50% surviving at least five years.

We are at that time of the year when everything’s about new goals to reach and projects to complete. A New Year’s classic. 2024 is around the corner, just as this year one gearing up to say goodbye, thanks for the memories. That also means the pressure is building up to reach certain milestones or have our entire lives figured out for the following 365 days.

Tough economic situations can be a very challenging period for both individuals and businesses. People lose their jobs and cut back on spending, and cash reserves start to dwindle. Credit markets become tighter, and banks begin to increase their lending restrictions. This probably makes you wonder whether it even makes sense to consider starting a new enterprise and, if you think it does, how do you do it? Part of your success depends on the kind of business you intend to start, so choose a structure that can thrive when times are tough.

  1. Find Funding – In securing financing for your intended business, come up with a financial plan to ascertain your initial revenue projections. Before applying for a loan, ask trusted friends or professional advisors to review your business plan to ensure you’re not overlooking anything critical or making inaccurate assumptions. Often credit unions offer lower interest rates and fees than commercial banks, so don’t narrow your search for financing down to only big banks. It is a good idea to build up your cash reserves to have enough to live off for six to 12 months. Make sure you budget carefully, so you can continue making your most crucial payments like rent/mortgage, utility bills, and food. Endeavor to check your financial gut to make sure you’re ready to start your new venture.
  2. Start Small -with a plan to expand – Perform a review of your business plan and reconsider what you need to start. You can consider opening up your business in a smaller and less expensive location or you could even operate online(virtual) by avoiding a physical office, get part-time staff. Be realistic about the entire idea of a business
  3. Use technology to your Advantage – Establishing a strong online presence through websites and social media expands market reach globally. Cloud services minimize infrastructure costs and enhance scalability, providing a flexible foundation for growth. Embracing emerging technologies fosters innovation, setting startups apart from competitors. Nearly all small businesses need to use social media marketing on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other social media sites to reach a broad audience in cyberspace. Digital marketing on social media creates a buzz of awareness around your brand, drives sales, and can be an affordable way to market your new business.
  4. Embrace Networking – It is very hard to thrive in business without networking. Get to know other people in your community who can refer customers and help build your business. Don’t know where to start? Find a local business networking group, we have almost rotary clubs in every area, consider joining a professional association—either a local one where you can meet people in person or an online group—to tap into others’ ideas. This has been my game changer the last three years!
  5. Do Smart Marketing – Starting a new business when the economy is taking a nosedive takes creativity and ingenuity. Marketing is vital to getting ahead of the game and your competitors. Take your business plan and flesh out the marketing components: What exactly are you going to sell? Who are your target customers? How will you price your products or services? What is your plan for promoting your business? You typically stand a better chance of succeeding by thinking niche. Slice and dice your original customer base to come up with smaller segments so you can market more strategically.
  6. How can I start a business with No Money? – I have numerously received this question from friends on how to start a business without money. Starting a business with no money is undoubtedly challenging, but with resourcefulness, creativity, and determination, it’s possible to launch a venture by; – (i) Utilizing skills you already possess to avoid the need for extensive training or hiring. This reduces the immediate financial burden on your startup, (ii) take advantage of free tools and resources available online. From website builders to social media platforms, numerous resources can help you establish an online presence at no cost. (iii) Offer your services as a freelancer or take on side gigs related to your business idea. Use the income generated to fund your startup and cover initial expenses, (iv) Cut costs by operating from home or using online platforms. This eliminates the need for expensive office space and reduces overhead expenses, (v) Forge partnerships with other businesses or individuals who complement your offerings. Networking can open doors to collaborative opportunities that don’t necessarily require financial investment.

With determination, strategic planning, and a focus on leveraging technology, entrepreneurs can navigate the complexities of economic challenges and build thriving small businesses.
