Netizens Roast Minister Okello Oryem For Saying Ugandans Dying Of Hunger Are Idiots

0

Ugandans have taken to social media especially on X formerly Twitter to express their disappointment and are roasting Foreign Affairs Minister Henry Okello Oryem for saying that Ugandans who die of hunger are idiots.

The minister who said out his mind in an exclusive interview about the just concluded Non Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China Summits which the country hosted last week, claimed there’s no way a Ugandan can die of hunger with all the abundant rains, good weather and fertile soils.

However, Oryem who has occupied the same position of State minister of foreign affairs for the last 20 years is on the receiving end with some Ugandans claiming the former first son is not connected with the reality Ugandans go through, not even those in his own district of Kitgum whom he represented in parliament until 2021 when he was representing Chua County but only aware of the situations around him.

By 16th August 2016, at least 12 people in Labolo and Nakwanya-Zaire villages in Orom Sub-county, Kitgum District had died of hunger in a period of just one month as reported by the then area councilor Quirino Olum.

“We have lost 12 people as a result of hunger. Many people lost their corps in the recent dry spell.”-Mr Olum said.

“We have lost 12 people as a result of hunger. Many people lost their crops in the recent dry spell.” Mr Olum said.

Karamoja, a mineral rich region is the most affected area where 100s die of hunger year in, year out. Despite interventions by government in ministries of Agriculture and Water, hunger remains a problem to the people of Karamoja because they’re traditionally pastoralists and majority are slowly changing to Agriculture but even their weather is not that encouraging.

Even in regions where the weather is not that bad like Karamoja, people suffer hunger due to the ever changing seasons. Rains come when least expected and disappear when much needed, this uncertainty leaves many families with hunger knocking at their doors despite making all the efforts to fight food insecurity in their homes.

Some who die of hunger are victims of calamities like flooding, landslides which destroy crops and end up displacing them to other areas when they have nothing to eat. Unless the minister has not been in Uganda for the last 10 years, he has to be equipped with these factors.

For calling Ugandans dying of hunger as idiots, Netizens are roasting the minister and urging him to recall his statement or give a clarification of what exactly he meant. Some are supporting the minister’s words, while others are not happy with him.

ODEKE BAZEL: Why United Forces of Change Is Still a Barking Dog

0
By Odeke Bazel
After he took over power in 1986, the then 44 year-old President Kaguta Museveni said, “this isn’t a mere change of guard, this is fundamental change in the politics of our country” Indeed, It’s nearly 40 years, he is still the serving president. Whether his leadership has been commendable or tainted depends on which position, capacity and circumstance your trying to assess. Of course, the disciples of the regime, will choose it over and over due to the benefits attached and therefore, seem to enjoy ‘fundamental change’.
To the democrats, patriots, opposition cadres, who, since then, have fallen apart with the regime, due to numerous atrocities, that have been executed in the name of clinging on power – abrogation of the Constitution, violation of human rights, corruption, mention them, have clearly lost hope in the regime, hence compelling them to look for a premium strategy of dislodging the regime, which, surprisingly remain a dream despite the number of years.
AD: FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313
It’s worthy noting that, every ploy to oust NRM out of power has always ended up becoming a boomerang to the proponents. The regime, in many occasions, has orchestrated; divide, confuse, conquer, arrest, intimidate, as a weapon of destroying the opposition, and the juicy one, through appointment.
In a letter to the Speaker dated 5th January 2024, President Museveni reappointed Byabakama and Hajat Aiisha Lubega to another seven-year term in office, together with other new entrants, I guess you know what that mean! This move has not settled well with opposition members, who since then, have been trying to advocate for reforms, owing to the fact that, engaging in an election without reforms is a clear victory to the regime, in other words, it’s fighting already won battle!
To this effect, several meetings have been held(in opposition camp), which saw the declaration of United Forces of Change(UFC), an umbrella that is envisioned to bring opposition political parties “together”, the notable ones being; NUP, FDC Katanga, DP and UPC remnants. To them, UFC, will cause an impact, What a strategy so far!
Notably, it’s not the first time such a move has been championed, to cripple Mr. Museveni’s regime. Guess what, such a move has always remained on paper than reality, as members opt to pursue divergent agenda. With that said, what makes opposition think, it will work this time around?
In my view, it’s more hypocritical to even imagine of the union, if the factors that made the union a back-wrong-horse in the first place haven’t been addressed. Mathew 7:5 asserts, “You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye”. Opposition leaders, need, not just a union but a deeper introspection into more pertinent and appealing issues.
Much as they(opposition )seem to be okay with the strategy, to some gurus, the union conveys a resemblance to other unions before, and therefore, bound to suffer the same, if not worst, ramifications
Firstly, the individual approach and strategy held by the henchmen, seem to differ, Dr. Kizza for example, in 2011 referred elections as ‘useless’, and since then advocated for boycotting of elections, the idea that wasn’t welcomed even within his cycle, since the approach requires maximum mobilization country-wide, and whether the majority of Ugandans accept it is another question. Further, whether the veteran politician accepts to abandon his strategy for the good of the union, is another issue.
On the other hand, Mr. Kyagulanyi( Bobi Wine), a musician turned politician, seem to pursue a radical approach, characterized by defiance, strikes and demonstrations, the recent being “banana farming” However, such approach requires a lot of cross tabulation, since, most Ugandans seem not to kowtow due it’s direct negative impacts. The approach therefore, requires proper assessment, and whether Ugandans accept it is also another question!
On contrary, Mr. Muntu on the other hand seem to pursue a more diplomatic approach, which entails building of structures right from the grass level in order to counter react and dislodge NRM. Much as this approach may have well intentions(positive), we are talking about a country that’s counting almost 40years of single leadership, so, to some people, patience might be too far from reality.
As if that’s not enough, internal conflicts have been very central, a definite characteristic to opposition political parties, resulting to break off. The recent being FDC and DP. This alone, has affected and damaged the image of opposition before the masses since, they(opposition)seem to be seeking individual interests rather than National course. No wonder, prominent leaders keep somersaulting from one block to another, dancing along lines of opportunism!
Owing to the above, it’s imperative that opposition leaders conduct self introspection, clear public mistrust that, they have built over the years, pay allegiance to a single strategy, other than unions and lengthy speeches that have no resultant impact to the liberation they seem to agitate for. If you can’t unite for a common course, then it’s obvious, you will remain a barking dog.

UPDATE: Shocking Details Emerge As Molly Katanga Is Finally Remanded To Luzira Prisons

0

The widow of slain Kampala tycoon Henry Katanga who was brought to the Nakawa Magistrate court in a wheelchair to answer charges regarding her involvement in the murder of her husband Henry Katanga on 2nd November 2023 has been remanded to Luzira prisons.

Court presided over by Chief Magistrate Elisa Kakooza who even issued the warranty of arrest that forced Molly out of IHK hospital where had been confined since early November heard that 55-year-old Molly Katanga on November 2nd November 2023 at Mbuya Chwa II road, Nakawa Division in Kampala with malice aforethought murdered Henry Katanga by shooting him dead with a pistol.

Since the court has no jurisdiction to try her, the charges were only communicated to her and the prosecution led by Jonathan Muwaganya informed the Court that the investigations were complete and asked court to commit her to the high court for trial.

Molly Katanga has been on wanted since early November 2023 and has been snubbing court since then. Even her daughter Martha Nkwanzi had snubbed court severally in the pretext of breast feeding her now three months baby until a warranty of arrest was issued. She was brought to court two weeks ago and has also been committed to the high court for trial alongside her sister Patricia Kakwanza and two others who are also in jail.

After reading the evidence the court which the court intends to use against her, Molly’s lawyers led by Peter Kabatsi asked the court to issue an order to prisons such that there’s continued management of their sick clients in liaison with the cooperation of the IHK doctors who have been tending to her. Kabatsi further says that his client has undergone five consecutive injuries although she’s progressively recovering, she still needs medical attention.

Molly’s Lawyer further added that the home of the accused has since the incident not been accessible to the family and asked that since investigations are complete, they should be allowed to access it. MacDusman Kabega who is also Molly’s lawyer added that the areas has remained cordoned off even when the police were through with whatever they wanted to pick from the scene of crime and he asked court to order police to vacate the premises.

Magistrate Kakooza has directed the prison officers to make sure that Molly Katanga’s doctors access her while in prison. He has also ruled that the family members shouldn’t be blocked by security from accessing their home and subsequently remanded Molly Katanga to Luzira prison until such a time when the High Court will be ready to try her.

Relatedly, on Wednesday morning, the High Court Criminal Division judge Isaac Muwata fixed January 29th 2024 to hear the bail application for Molly’s co-accused persons. Molly is accusing along with her daughters Patricia Kakwanza and Martha Nkwanzi all face charges of murder and destroying evidence respectively. The others are Amanyire George (a shamba boy) and Charles Otai (a healthy worker) are accused of being accessories to murder.

The daughters, Martha and Patricia are accused of tampering with evidence, making it unidentifiable for judicial proceedings while Amanyire and Otai allegedley assisted others involved in the crime.

Evidence presented to the court indicates that Molly and the deceased had four children, including the daughters involved in he trial. The deceased expressed concerns about his safety before his death, fearing he was being tracked by his wife. He had taken precautions such as changing phone passwords and acquiring a new private telephone line.

The prosecutions further asserts that Molly and the deceased had dinner together on November 1st, 2023 but the next day, only Molly was found in their bedroom. A loud blast was heard, leading to he discovery of blood in the bedroom. Molly was seen standing in the doorway. Subsequently, Nkwanzi and Kakwanza arrived, and the latter drove Molly to Bugolobi medical centre.

“A5 not believing, A3’s response by calling the telephone number of the deceased to find out whether he was okay but instead Nkwanzi confronted him with the deceased’s phone in her hand and questioned A5’s actions of calling the deceased’s phone as opposed to cleaning the blood as instructed,”-read a narration in he committal papers.

The documents presented to court further allege that all accused persons, except Amanyire returned home, closed themselves in the master bedroom, and later allowed him inside. They instructed him to lift the deceased’s body onto a small mattress before Otai called the police to report a suicide case.

The Director of Public Prosecutions plans to rely on postmortem reports, forensic analyses, phone printouts and scene of crime reports as evidence in court.

The prosecution argues that Molly’s DNA was found on the trigger, and the cartridges matched the pistol recovered at the scene of crime. The DPP contends that there is no valid defense for the accused persons and they should be convicted as charged. Once found guilty of murder, the highest punishment for murder is also death.

KATANGA MURDER: Court Now Orders For Arrest Of Molly Bananukye From Her Hospital Bed

0

On 2nd November 2023, business man and tycoon Henry Kantanga died under unclear circumstances by shooting at his Mbuya mansion in Nakawa division. Several suspects including Katanga’s daughter Patricia, a Doctor and a Shamba boy were arrested and remanded to Luzira prisons until now the latest being Martha Nkwanzi who had skipped court severally but was also forcefully arraigned in court and also remanded.

Since the death of her husband, Molly Katanga has been lodged at IHK hospital where she’s said to have gone through several surgeries and has never appeared in court despite criminal summons issued on her name.

The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday issued an arrest warrant against Molly Katanga after she failed to respond to multiple court summons requiring her to appear and answer charges related to her husband Henry Katanga.

Chief Magistrate Elias Kakooza ordered the police to locate Molly Katanga and forcefully bring her to court by February 12, 2024 sighting that medical reports presented by lawyers in court did not adequately explain the extent of her injuries to the court.

He further noted that if Molly is truly ill, the courts and prisons have mechanisms of handling sick patients. Additionally, she could apply for bail before the high court based on her medical condition.

Court now contends the same narrative like that of Katanga’s mother Mirieli Kyobuhoro,91 years who hired top city Lawyers headed by former Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana, Paul Kutesa and Frank Kanduho to see to it that she gets justice for her murdered son.

In her December letter to the Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Francis Abodo, Mirieli stated that then that Martha Nkwanza and her mother Molly Katanga Bananukye be transferred from IHK to Luzira prisons. She further said that if indeed the patients are sick, prisons would advise otherwise but have better medical facilities to take care of the two.

Since her demands, Martha who had also lodged at IHK over her newly born baby whom sh was lactating has since been forcefully brought to court and it’s only her mother Molly Bananukye Katanga who is still lodging at the city hospital over injuries which some say are self-inflicted.

The court now seeks Molly’s presence to join her daughters, Martha Nkwanzi Katanga and Patricia Kakwanza who have since been committed to the high court for their alleged involvement in their father’s murder on November 2, 2023 at the family home on Chwa II road in Nakawa division. This follows the completion of police investigations. They have now been told to apply for bail from the high court.

It’s alleged that Abaho hit a pothole at a place called Katogo, causing him to loose control of the motorcycle. He then collided with a metallic roadside guard and fell, sustaining fatal injuries.

Police were informed of the accident, and the scene was visited and documented. Abaho’s body was taken to Nyakibale hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination, and his motorcycle was parked at the Rukungiri police station pending inspection.

Abaho’s death highlights the dangers posed by poor road conditions in Uganda. Potholes are a common problem on many Ugandan roads and can pose serious risks to motorists particularly motorcyclists who are vulnerable to accidents.

The statement added that investigations into the accident are ongoing.

Abaho’s death highlights the dangers posed by poor road conditions in Uganda. Potholes are a common problem on many Ugandan roads, and they can pose serious risks to motorists, particularly motorcyclists who are more vulnerable to accidents.

Police continues to pitch camp at the homes of opposition politicians who were set to protest the poor conditions of roads in the city and else where in the country on Thursday last week. Besigye and Erias Lukwago continue being under house detention as Bobi Wine who escaped house arrest continues being at large as police mount road brocks to search and arrest him.
