ULTIMATE HEALTH: 8 Early Signs Of Breast Cancer To Watch Out For

0

A breast lump or mass is one possible sign of breast cancer. Changes to the skin on and around the breast, such as dimpling, swelling, and nipple discharge, can also be a symptom of breast cancer.

In some cases, even if breast cancer does not cause any symptoms, a cancerous mass may still be found on a female’s routine mammogram. Screening for breast cancer, as recommended by a doctor, can help detect this condition in its earliest and most treatable stage.

Breast cancer is more common in females. However, males are also at risk of developing breast cancer. In this article, we discuss some of the potential signs and symptoms of breast cancer that may occur without a noticeable lump in the breast.

All of these symptoms can also have a noncancerous underlying cause. However, people with these symptoms should speak with a doctor in case tests are necessary to check for both noncancerous and cancerous conditions.

1.Changes to the skin’s texture: Breast cancer can cause changes and inflammation in skin cells that can lead to texture changes. Examples of these texture changes include scaly skin around the nipple and areola, as though the skin is sunburned or extremely dry, and skin thickening in any part of the breast.

These changes may also cause itching, which people often associate with breast cancer, although it is not common. Skin changes such as nipple scaling may be symptomatic of a rare breast cancer type called Paget’s disease.

Skin thickening and texture changes may be consistent with inflammatory breast cancer. Texture changes can also occur as a result of benign skin conditions, including dermatitis and eczema.

2.Nipple discharge: A person may observe discharge from the nipple, which can be thin or thick and range in color from clear to milky to yellow, green, or bloody. The discharge typically comes from one nipple. However, it can come from both nipples if both breasts are cancerous.

It is normal for people who are breastfeeding to have a milky discharge from the nipples, but it is advisable to contact a doctor about any other nipple discharge. Although most nipple discharge is noncancerous, it can signify breast cancer in some people.

More concerning nipple discharge tends to be bloody, affects one nipple, and is spontaneous. Other possible reasons for nipple discharge include birth control, some medications, and some infections.

3. Dimpling: Skin dimpling can sometimes be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer, an aggressive type of breast cancer. Cancer cells can cause a buildup of lymph fluid in the breast that leads to swelling as well as dimpling or pitted skin. It is essential that anyone who notices skin dimpling speaks with a doctor.

Doctors call this change in the skin’s appearance “peau d’orange” because the dimpled skin resembles the surface of an orange. This may also be accompanied by the onset of erythema or edema of the breast (redness and swelling).

4. Lymph node changes: Lymph nodes are small, rounded collections of immune system tissue that filter fluid and capture potentially harmful cells. These include bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells.

If a cancer cell leaves the breast, the first place it typically travels to is the underarm lymph node region on the same side as the affected breast. This can lead to swelling in this area. In addition to swollen lymph nodes in the armpit, a person may notice them around the collarbone. They usually feel like small, firm, swollen lumps and may be tender to the touch.

However, lymph tissue may also change due to breast infections or other completely unrelated illnesses. A person should speak with a doctor about these changes so that they can identify a potential cause.

5. Breast or nipple pain: Breast cancer can cause changes in skin cells that lead to feelings of pain, tenderness, and discomfort in the breast. If a lump is present, it is not painful. Although breast cancer is often painless, it is important not to ignore any signs or symptoms that could be due to breast cancer. Some people may describe the pain as a burning and tender sensation.

6. Nipple retraction or inversion: Breast cancer can cause cell changes behind the nipple. These changes can result in the nipple inverting and reversing inward into the breast, or it may look different in terms of its size. The appearance of the nipples can often alter during ovulation or other parts of the menstrual cycle, but people should contact a doctor about any new nipple changes.

7. Swelling: Breast cancer can cause the entire breast or an area of the breast to swell . There may not be a distinct lump after this swelling, but the breast can be different in size than the other breast.

Although it is possible for people to have breasts that are slightly different in size at all times, this swelling would cause a change from their usual breast size. The skin may also feel tight due to the swelling.

8. Changes in breast size: Most people have breasts that are not the same size as each other, which is normal. However, if one breast increases in size without explanation, it may be a sign of breast cancer.

Although changes in the size of the breast can be a symptom of any type of breast cancer, the National Cancer Institute states that a rapid increase in breast size could be an indication of inflammatory breast cancer. This is a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer.

If someone notices that either or both of their breasts have increased in size, they should consider contacting a doctor.

When to contact a doctor: People should not panic or be fearful when they notice breast changes. Aging, changes in hormone levels, and other factors can lead to breast changes throughout a person’s lifetime.

However, people should be proactive about their health and visit a doctor to determine the cause of any breast symptoms.

Other reasons for breast pain: There are a number of other reasons a person may experience breast pain, which include: Bras that do not fit correctly, hormonal changes, mastitis, certain medications, chest wall pain that appears to come from the breast sprains in the back, neck, or shoulder, costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone and scar tissue

Other reasons for breast changes

Breast changes throughout a person’s life are normal and can happen for many reasons. These include :

  • Menopause: This can cause breasts to become smaller and lumpy. It can also cause lumps to disappear as the breast tissue becomes less dense and more fatty.
  • Menstrual cycle: Breasts may feel swollen, tender, or painful, and lumps can appear. These changes occur before menstruation.
  • Pregnancy: Milk glands increase in number and size and so can cause lumps.
  • Breastfeeding: This can cause mastitis, which may make the breast feel warm and tender, as well as red and lumpy.

Questions Linger As Russia Bombs Own City Twice

0

Russia bombed its eastern city of Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine, twice in a single day, according to local reports.

The Soviet-designed FAB aerial bombs were dropped by an aircraft belonging to Russia’s military on January 27, but the explosives didn’t detonate or cause any casualties, the independent Russian Telegram news channel ASTRA reported. Both bombs were defused the next day, the channel said.

Media couldn’t independently verify the report and has contacted Russia’s defense ministry by email for additional comment.

Belgorod is located near the Ukrainian border and houses several Russian military bases and training grounds. The region has been rocked by explosions and mysterious fires throughout Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, with local authorities regularly reporting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the area.

There have been numerous incidents reported in recent weeks that involved Russia’s military accidentally dropping munitions and missiles on its own civilians. On January 21, ASTRA reported that another FAB aerial bomb was dropped on one of its own dams in Belgorod.

Days earlier, on January 13, Russia dropped Kalibr missiles in the Krasnodar area, located in the North Caucasus region in southern Russia, twice in a single day.

The first Russian Kalibr missile fell in the region between the villages of Pavlovskaya and Atamanskaya in the morning, and the second came down in a field during the evening, causing no casualties or damage, ASTRA reported, citing sources in the region’s emergency services, Russian military analyst Ian Matveev, and analysts from the Conflict Intelligence Team.

And on January 2, a Russian missile fell on the village of Petropavlovka in the Voronezh region, injuring four people.

In a rare admission, the defense ministry said one of its own warplanes accidentally targeted the village of Petropavlovka, damaging at least six privately owned buildings. Videos circulating on social media showed a huge crater in the ground, caused by an explosion, and scattered debris.

“At around 9 a.m. on January 2, while an air force plane was flying over the village of Petropavlovka in the Voronezh region, there was an emergency release of aviation munitions,” the defense ministry said in a statement.

A similar incident in April 2023 saw Russia’s defense ministry admit to its own fighter jets accidentally bombing Belgorod, damaging multi-story buildings and injuring local residents. The Kremlin hasn’t commented on the latest incident reported in Belgorod.

NOT TRUE: UNATU Breaks Silence On Letters Urging Gov’t Teachers Not To Report To Schools For New Term

0

There had been panic and anxiety among teachers, parents and students as a note bearing a photo of the Uganda National Teacher’s Union (UNATU) Secretary General and another letter bearing his signature encouraging teachers not to report to classes until government increases their wages which they have been demanding for the last 10 years now.

However, the Secretary General of the UNATU Filbert Baguma has rubbished the allegations that teachers are staging a protest ahead of the 2024 first term opening next Monday 5th February. Baguma says the teacher’s he leads under UNATU are not staging a protest for low pay and has encouraged the members to disregard the documents making rounds on social media.

Speaking to KFM today in the morning, Baguma said the documents making rounds on social media are fake and not from UNATU and people should disregard them.

“That document is not from us, it is just fake because if we are releasing a document we make it official. People can do anything with technology. Teachers should go back to class as we engage because we wrote to the Minister of Education and Sports and she gave feedback and assigned someone to arrange a meeting and that’s he level we are”-Baguma told KFM

Teachers under UNATU have had their pleas to president Museveni to have their salaries increased hit a dead end as most of their strikes end in tears when their leaders call of strikes after meeting president Museveni.

Hell broke loose when president Museveni ordered science teachers to be paid a whooping Shs4million in the last financial year as their arts colleagues continue earning less than UGX700,000 and they’re no signs that the Museveni government will soon consider increasing their pay. The last time they tried to engage him over the same, Museveni told them not to rush him.

By comparison, overall rates of cervical cancer have remained largely stable over the past decade, according to the American Cancer Society.

“These data add to a growing body of evidence indicating widening disparities driven by socioeconomic status,” said co-senior study author Jane Montealegre, an associate professor of behavioral science at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. “Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable through vaccination against human papillomavirus [HPV], screening and early detection.”

The researchers found that in 2019, cervical cancer cases across all racial and ethnic groups were greater among women living in low-income counties, with the highest absolute number of cases observed in Hispanic women.

“The findings are quite concerning,” said lead author Trisha Amboree, a postdoctoral fellow in behavioral science at MD Anderson.

“Despite decades of improvement due to the widespread implementation of cervical cancer prevention programs in the U.S., our study shows women may be facing disruptions along the screening and treatment continuum that are leading to more distant-stage cancers and, potentially, more deaths,” Amboree added in an MD Anderson news release.

Thanks to screening tools like the Pap test, cervical cancer rates decreased by more than half between the mid-1970s and the mid-2000s, according to the American Cancer Society.

Rates have been stable overall since, but the ACS noted that cervical cancers have increased about 1.7% annually for women ages 30-44 between 2012 and 2019.

Conversely, cervical cancer cases have declined 11% each year for women ages 20 to 24, likely reflecting the first effects of cancer prevention from HPV vaccination, the ACS said.

The researchers relied on cancer surveillance data gathered by the federal government between 2000 and 2019.

Digital Marketing In Africa: A Booming Frontier

0

Africa, the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent, is experiencing a digital revolution. With internet penetration rising rapidly and mobile phone usage skyrocketing, the continent is becoming a prime target for digital marketing. This presents both exciting opportunities and unique challenges for businesses looking to connect with African consumers.

Untapped Potential:

Africa’s digital landscape is still evolving, but the potential is undeniable. The continent boasts a young and dynamic population, with over 60% under the age of 35. This tech-savvy generation is increasingly turning to online platforms for information, communication, and commerce. This creates a vast and largely untapped market for businesses willing to invest in digital marketing strategies.

Challenges and Considerations:

However, navigating the African digital landscape comes with its own set of challenges. Infrastructure limitations, varying levels of digital literacy, and cultural nuances all need to be taken into account. Here are some key considerations for digital marketers venturing into Africa:

Mobile-first approach: Africa has the highest mobile penetration rate globally, with over 70% of internet users accessing the web through their phones. Therefore, mobile-first marketing strategies are essential, with websites and content optimized for smaller screens and slower internet connections.

Local language and content: Africa is a diverse continent with over 2,000 languages spoken. While English is widely used in business, creating content in local languages can significantly increase engagement and brand loyalty.

Culturally sensitive approach: Understanding and respecting local cultures is crucial for successful digital marketing in Africa. Humor, imagery, and messaging should be adapted to avoid causing offense or misunderstanding.

Focus on storytelling: Africans are known for their rich oral traditions, and storytelling can be a powerful tool for digital marketing. Use compelling narratives to connect with consumers on an emotional level and build brand trust.

Success Stories:

Despite the challenges, several businesses have successfully harnessed the power of digital marketing in Africa. Jumia, an e-commerce platform founded in Nigeria, has become a household name across the continent by leveraging mobile technology and local partnerships. Similarly, Airtel, a leading telecommunications provider, has used targeted social media campaigns and mobile money services to reach millions of African consumers.

The Future of Digital Marketing in Africa:

The future of digital marketing in Africa is bright. As internet penetration continues to grow and infrastructure improves, the continent is poised to become a major player in the global digital economy. Businesses that embrace the unique challenges and opportunities of the African market and develop culturally relevant strategies stand to reap significant rewards.

In conclusion, digital marketing in Africa is not just about selling products and services; it’s about building relationships and understanding the continent’s diverse cultures. By doing so, businesses can tap into a vast and vibrant market and contribute to Africa’s digital transformation.

Cryptocurrencies In Africa: Potential, Pitfalls And The Way Forward

0

Cryptocurrencies have captured the imagination of millions across the globe, and Africa is no exception. With its young, tech-savvy population and often-fragile traditional financial systems, the continent presents fertile ground for the adoption of digital assets. However, alongside the potential for financial inclusion and economic growth lie significant limitations that cannot be ignored.

Lack of Regulation and Awareness:

One of the biggest challenges facing cryptocurrencies in Africa is the lack of clear regulations. This creates uncertainty for investors and businesses, hindering wider adoption. Additionally, many Africans lack the financial literacy and awareness necessary to navigate the complex world of crypto. Scams and fraud are rampant, preying on vulnerable individuals.

Limited Access to Technology and Infrastructure:

Large parts of Africa still struggle with limited internet access and unreliable electricity grids. This makes it difficult for people to access and use cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets. The lack of physical infrastructure, such as ATMs for cashing out digital currencies, further restricts their usefulness for everyday transactions.

High Volatility and Risk:

Cryptocurrency markets are notoriously volatile, with prices swinging wildly in short periods. This makes them a risky investment, particularly for individuals with limited financial resources. The potential for sudden losses can discourage people from using cryptocurrencies for everyday transactions.

Environmental Concerns:

The energy consumption associated with cryptocurrency mining, particularly for proof-of-work protocols like Bitcoin, has raised environmental concerns. This is a significant issue for Africa, where access to clean energy is already a challenge.

Potential for Illicit Activities:

The anonymity of cryptocurrency transactions can make them attractive for criminal activities such as money laundering and tax evasion. This poses a risk to financial stability and security in Africa.

Despite these limitations, the potential of cryptocurrencies in Africa remains significant. Blockchain technology, the underlying technology behind crypto, can be used to develop innovative solutions for financial inclusion, supply chain management, and land ownership. Governments and organizations are working to address the challenges and harness the potential of crypto for good.

Here are some steps that can be taken to mitigate the limitations of cryptocurrencies in Africa:

Develop clear and balanced regulations: This will provide certainty for investors and businesses and help to protect consumers from scams.

Promote financial literacy and education: Educating people about cryptocurrencies and the associated risks will help them make informed decisions.

Invest in infrastructure: Expanding access to the internet and reliable electricity is essential for wider adoption of cryptocurrencies.

Develop sustainable blockchain solutions: Exploring alternative consensus mechanisms, such as proof-of-stake, can reduce the environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining.

Combat illegal activities: Implementing robust anti-money laundering and know-your-customer (KYC) regulations can help to prevent the misuse of cryptocurrencies.

By addressing these limitations and harnessing the potential of cryptocurrencies responsibly, Africa can unlock a new era of financial inclusion and economic development.
