At Least 7 Killed, 67 Injured In Russian Missile Strike On Ukraine’s Pokrovsk City

At least seven people were killed and 67 injured in a Russian nighttime missile strike on a city in Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk, local authorities said early on Tuesday.

“The tragedy in Pokrovsk: information about the victims as of 7:00 a.m (0400GMT). Seven people died. 67 were injured, including 29 police officers, seven rescuers and two children,” Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said in a statement on Telegram.

Authorities had to halt demolition work in the area due to the high threat of repeated shelling, but were later able to continue, Klymenko added.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry said in a later statement on Telegram that fires covering a total area of 75 square meters (807 sq feet) at a residential building and hotel had been put out, and that there were no people under the rubble, according to preliminary information.

“Emergency and rescue work is being carried out in a five-story residential building,” the statement also said.

Separately, Donetsk Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko claimed on Telegram that the strikes on Pokrovsk city were conducted with Iskander missiles, saying that the attack damaged private homes, high-rise buildings, a hotel, and an administrative building.

In an earlier statement late Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said rescuers and all necessary services are on the scene of the attacks

“We have to stop the Russian terror. Everyone who fights for the freedom of Ukraine saves lives. Everyone in the world who helps Ukraine will defeat the terrorists together with us. Russia will be held accountable for everything it has done in this terrible war,” Zelenskyy said.

Julen Lopetegui has left his job as Wolves coach just days before the start of the Premier League season after reportedly being unhappy over the club’s recruitment policy.

“Wolves and Julen Lopetegui have reached an agreement to part ways, ending the Spaniard’s nine-month reign as head coach at the club,” Wolves said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The head coach and club acknowledged and accepted their differences of opinion on certain issues and agreed that an amicable end to his contract was the best solution for all parties.”

Former Bournemouth head coach Gary O’Neil, sacked this summer after steering the Cherries to top-flight safety, is reported to be in line to replace Lopetegui.

Former Spain and Real Madrid boss Lopetegui joined Wolves in November, replacing Bruno Lage, with the club bottom of the Premier League and helped them stay in the top flight, finishing 13th.

But the 56-year-old was said to be frustrated by their approach in the transfer market, with a number of first-team players departing this summer and few replacements found.

Wolves have sold the likes of Ruben Neves, Conor Coady, Nathan Collins and Raul Jimenez and have only brought in two players on free transfers – Matt Doherty and Tom King.

Fire Fighters Battle Wildfires In Portugal

Hundreds of firefighters are tackling a series of wildfires in Portugal as extreme heat grips the country.

Around 1,400 people were evacuated from their homes in the town of Odemira, 125 miles south of Lisbon, as firefighters tackle a blaze which is now spreading south towards the Algarve.

Over 700 fire vehicles and at least 14 water carrier aircraft responded to the inferno on Monday, the Associated Press reported.

Nine firefighters have reportedly been injured while fighting the fires.

On Monday, the country’s hottest temperature of the year was recorded in Santarém, north-east of Lisbon, where temperatures soared to 46.4C.

The sacking of Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda from being the party’s whip in the 11th parliament by FDC Secretary General Nathan Mafabi made headlines amidst the infightings and bickering because of Museveni’s evil money that was used to fund the campaign trail of Patrick Oboi Amuriat.

Ssemuju Nganda, Dr Kiiza Besigye among others accuse Nandala Mafabi and POA of harboring plans of selling the party to Museveni and it goes silent the DP, UPC style. Nandala Mafabi and Patrick Oboi Amuriat accuse the Besigye group of also having plans of selling FDC to Bobi Wine’s NUP.

In a letter dated 07th August 2023 addressed to the Speaker of parliament, Nandala Mafabi withdrew Ssemuju Nganda as the party’s Whip and replaced him with Mawokota South Yusuf Nsibambi. Nandala must have done this to trim Ssemuju’s powers.

“In accordance with section 61 (1), the Party hereby appoints Hon. Yusuf Nsibambi as the Party Whip of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) to replace Hon Ssemuju Ibrahim Nganda”-reads the statement in part.

“In the same vein, we hereby withdraw Hon. Ssemuju Ibrahim Nganda as the party Whip with immediate effect”- the statement further reads.

Upon learning that he’s fired, Ssemuju Nganda has hit at Nandala Mafabi saying the Budadiri West man is just fulfilling Museveni’s demands of punishing whoever gives the man from Rwakitura hard time to rule Uganda to the destiny he wishes especially at the  moment that he’s even preparing his son Muhoozi through MK project to take over after him.

The Kira Municipality legislator also goes ahead to congratulate Nandala Mafabi and Patrick Oboi Amuriat upon realizing that Ssemuju is a big problem to them and they’ve trimmed his powers. Ssemuju says if the Nandala group wanted the FDC whip leadership he would have given it them but not firing him like they’re purporting.

“My major responsibility is to represent the people of Kira Municipality, they were already uncomfortable and this started much earlier even with elections. Amuriat has been so incompetent that he even fears competition from his own people. I think now he will become a very big leader now that Ssemuju who has been disturbing him is no longer the whip and i congratulate him”-Ssemuju further hit at Nandala and Amuriat

Katakwi: The political pressure currently for Ngariam county in Katakwi district is gaining momentum day and night as two bulls are fighting to represent the county come 2026 general elections.

Ngariam county is currently represented by Hon.Peter Ogwang the junior minister for Sports as is likely Dan Mulalu who’s president Museveni’s private secretary in charge political mobilization also eyes the same ahead of the general elections and he has since bombarded the county with many projects such as clean water, roofing more than 40 churches, repairing hundreds of boreholes, distribution of seeds, linking farmers with Kenya traders for market of their produce among others.

The most shocking wave that has caused panic and everyone is asking the financial strength of Mr.Dan Mulalu when he delivered over 180 electrical beds to Katakwi health centers and also installed solar systems to the health facilities that have been operating on give lights. The delivery of beds last week, caused excitement among the mothers who have been delivering on the floor.

“Jesus, Jesus, Jesus thanks for this boy, we had no Hope’s of giving birth from these kind of beds, God reward him,”one of the woman was hard shouting with joy.

Gerem Omoding one of the residents said the entire community has already felt  being well represented even though Mr.Mulalu is not in parliament.

Roger’s Okello another resident says Mulalu support was timely looking at the current situation  of poor services in the district.

He has also started identifying vulnerable children but bright such as orphans and those girls who dropped out school due to teenage pregnancies.

Minister Amongi Assures UN Secretary General on Ending Sexual Violence

Kampala: The Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon. Amongi Betty Ongom has this morning met with the United Nations Under Secretary-General and Special Coordinator on improving the UN response to sexual exploitation and abuse, Mr. Christian Saunders, during which they discussed ways to strengthen programs aimed at ending sexual abuse.

In the meeting held at the Ministry offices in Kampala, Saunders emphasized the importance of targeting men and boys in the campaign against sexual violence, recognizing their potential to make significant contributions in eradicating this vice. He also stressed the value of involving champions from sports and creative sectors to lend their voices to the campaign against sexual exploitation and abuse.

Saunders further challenged the Ugandan government, as a contributor to regional peacekeeping missions, to ensure that Ugandans deployed outside the country adhere to the policy against sexual exploitation and abuse.

“It’s important that we don’t turn into exploiters of the people we are supposed to be helping,” He said while acknowledging the UN’s efforts to address reports of sexual exploitation involving its members worldwide.

In response, Minister Amongi highlighted Uganda’s strong policy and legal frameworks prohibiting sexual violence across various strata of society. She emphasized Uganda’s commitment to ending sexual violence, demonstrated by its participation in global and regional coalitions against violence through signing various conventions.

She said that besides the laws and policies in place to protect women and girls in communities, Government has also just ratified Convention number 190 that focuses on eliminating violence and harassment in the workplace. She revealed that the ratified convention would be deposited at the UN headquarters on August 7, 2023, followed by domestication efforts.

She added that Uganda was also signing Bilateral Labour Agreements with other States where Ugandans work to ensure their overall safety.

Amongi noted that poverty is a key facilitator of sexual exploitation and abuse and as such, government is running a number of livelihood programmes with the most current being the Parish Development Model to improve incomes within the populace.

On the topic of male engagement, Amongi revealed the existence of a Male Engagement strategy within the Ministry and stressed the need to reinforce its implementation at both the national and subnational levels to encourage greater involvement of men and boys in the campaign.

Pastoralists Demand For Urgent Screening Of Somalis Trading Camels In Amudat District.

Just barely one month after Kenyan pastoralists complained over massive theft of camels from Kenya where thieves rush and sell them to Somali nationals that have settled in Amudat district, a section of pastoralists in Amudat district, Karamoja sub region have added their voices to the Kenya pastoralists asking Uganda government to take note of the overwhelming growing number of Somalis who are mainly from Garisa in Kenya and Somalia to Amudat district.

The somalis have embarked on serious trade on camels in Amudat, something that pastoralists are crying that the business had changed into massive stealing of camels from Kenya. Amudat district is located in the north eastern Uganda in Karamoja region  The district is occupied by the Kalenjin ethnicity and they live both in West Pokot in Kenya and Amudat in Uganda.

Speaking to this publication Paul Chepokos one of the pastoralists from Kiwawa says many camels are being stolen and sold to the somalis.

“Now the cattle raiding is reducing, but camel thefts is again going up and governmnet needs to check on these Somalis dealing in this business-“he said.

According to Chepokos, a lifestyle of a camel is totally different from livestock adding that a camel can move out from their home three months eating shrubs and get back at their time but when the thieves get it them in the wildness, they just drive them crossing to Uganda and sold quickly to Somalis who also take them to Kampala.

Chepokos cited an incident where one of the camel stolen from Kenya was sold to a Somali trader who transported it to Kampala quickly but later after hearing that he was being hunted for buying a stolen camel, the trader decided to return back the camel but it has never reached to the owner.

This publication learnt  that a price of camel is higher than that of a bull, a big camel goes for about Shs3million while a big local bull goes for Shs1.3m.

Interestingly, they are no gazzetted places for selling and buying of these camels, Somali traders just move around the community and buy and load them without taking precaution either its stolen or not.

Mark Kiyonga another pastoralists says they were so suspicious of the behaviors exhibited by these Somali traders when the locals try to ask them about the trading licences.

“Some of them claim, they are only answerable to state house not the locals  something we want to know because we are afraid-“he said.
