Last Sunday, a group of 60 UPC cadres and mobilizers got in touch with Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng Lira City office and announced their defection to NRM. The defection was formally declared and celebrated in the Amuca cell where over 60 congressmen and women professed NRM and vowed to campaign for Museveni’s reelection come 2026.
Saying that even as UPCs they in 2021 voted for Aceng because they considered her to be a unifier and development-oriented leader, the UPCs also enumerated some of the service delivery challenges facing the respective communities they came from.
These included lack of adequate access to clean water which they suggested can be overcome through having more boreholes set up in their respective cells. That in some instances, boreholes are in existence but are currently not functioning properly because of poor maintenance.
They told Aceng’s assistants that they will be grateful if her good office can mobilize resources and have the same rehabilitated. They appreciated Aceng’s busy schedule which requires her to be travelling nationally and requested she finds time to meet them personally someday to have more fruitful interaction.
In a related development, the UPCs are now encouraged by the wins they have been registering in byelections in Oyam and more recently Dokolo to conclude that their Betty Amongi doesn’t need to opportunistically join NRM to be able to become Lira City Woman MP.
They are now convinced that she can ride on the momentum from the two byelections and unseat the incumbent Lira City Woman MP Jane Ruth Aceng. Sources say that its the reason Betty Amongi doesn’t regret skipping or missing out on the recently concluded NRM new membership registration and party register update exercise.
