KASESE SCHOOL ATTACK: Death Toll Raises To 41 As New Details Emerge

0

It’s a sad morning and we call call it a black Saturday, this is after the death of Supreme Court Lady justice Mary Stella Arach Amoko who passed away early this morning as announced by the Judiciary.

However, there’s still disturbing news of an attack at Lhubirira Secondary School in Mpondwe in Kasese district just 2kms away from the Congolese Boarder with Uganda by Allied Democratic Forces.

In the morning we reported that 25 Students had been burnt in a hostel at the school, 8 critically injured and are currently undergoing treatment at Bwela hospital and over 30 were abducted as the rebels pushed back to the jungles of Congo towards Virunga National Park inside Congo.

In the new updates, the death toll has now raised to 41 people. These include the 22 Students slaughtered by the attack, 17 students killed by a bomb as the rebels were leaving the school and 2 residents. Authorities are yet to establish the total number of those abducted and the death toll might raise as updates flow in.

In the police statement released earlier in the morning, the rebels also looted a food store at the store, used the abducted students to carry the food and by the time of the statement, Police and Army were doing a hot pursuit of the rebels.

Questions continue flowing in how the rebels beat the intelligence at the boarder lines to raid the school.

UPDF launched a full brown operation against the Allied Democratic Forces in late 2021 after the group claimed responsibility of two city bombs that left 7 people dead. President Museveni in recent addresses has always confirmed how the UPDF under the Shujja Operation alongside the Congolese Army has wiped out the ADF rebels in Congo.

Jamil Mukulu who is said to have been an ADF leader is still caged at Luzira prison after being captured from the neighboring Tanzania in 2015 and is yet to be tried or sentenced by the courts in Uganda.

This attack comes at the backdrop of an attack last month on 26th May 2023 on an African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) base in Somalia in Buulo-Mareer by Al-Shabaab terrorists. The attack left 54 UPDF soldiers dead, several injured and scores taken as captives.

Putin Reveals Russia Has Positions Nuclear Bombs In Belarus As Warning To West

0

President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that his deployment of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, something he confirmed for the first time had already happened, was a reminder to the West that it could not inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.

Speaking at Russia’s flagship economic forum in St Petersburg, Putin said Russian tactical nuclear warheads had already been delivered to close ally Belarus, but stressed he saw no need for Russia to resort to nuclear weapons for now.

“As you know we were negotiating with our ally, (Belarusian President (Alexander) Lukashenko, that we would move a part of these tactical nuclear weapons to the territory of Belarus – this has happened,” said Putin.

FOR THE BEST WEB HOSTING, WEB DESIGNS AND DOMAIN NAMES, CALL OR WHATSAPP +256758201313

“The first nuclear warheads were delivered to the territory of Belarus. But only the first ones, the first part. But we will do this job completely by the end of the summer or by the end of the year.”

The move, Moscow’s first deployment of such warheads – shorter-range nuclear weapons that could potentially be used on the battlefield – outside Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union was intended as a warning to the West about arming and supporting Ukraine, the Russian leader said.

“…It is precisely as an element of deterrence so that all those who are thinking about inflicting a strategic defeat on us are not oblivious to this circumstance,” said Putin, using a diplomatic term for a defeat so severe that Russian power would be diminished on the world stage for decades.

Lukashenko, a staunch ally of Putin, said late on Tuesday his country had started taking delivery of Russian tactical nuclear weapons that included some three times more powerful than the atomic bombs the U.S. dropped on Japan in 1945.

The Russian leader announced in March he had agreed to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, pointing to the U.S deployment of such weapons in a host of European countries over many decades.

PUTIN SAYS WEST WANTS STRATEGIC DEFEAT

The United States has criticised Putin’s decision but has said it has no intention of altering its own stance on strategic nuclear weapons and has not seen any signs that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon.

The Russian step is nonetheless being watched closely by Washington and its allies as well as by China, which has repeatedly cautioned against the use of nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine.

Putin said the West was doing everything it could to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia in Ukraine where Moscow is locked in the biggest land war in Europe since World War Two after invading its neighbour last year in what it called “a special military operation.”

But Russia had no need to resort to nuclear weapons for now, said Putin, signalling no change in Moscow’s nuclear posture which only envisages such a move if the existence of the Russian state is threatened.

“Nuclear weapons have been made to ensure our security in the broadest sense of the word and the existence of the Russian state, but we…have no such need (to use them),” Putin said.

But he said talks with the West to reduce Russia’s vast nuclear arsenal, the world’s largest, were a non-starter.

“Just talking about this (the potential use of nuclear weapons) lowers the nuclear threshold. We have more than NATO countries and they want to reduce our numbers. Screw them,” said Putin.

Sounding defiant as he addressed his country’s political and business elite, he said a Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian forces in Ukraine had so far not had any meaningful success. Kyiv’s forces were suffering heavy losses and had “no chance” against Russia’s military, he said.

Ukraine would soon run out of its own military equipment, making it totally reliant on hardware supplied by the West, undermining its ability to fight for long, he suggested.

Recalling his stated objectives at the start of the war to “demilitarise” and “denazify” Ukraine, Putin said:

“As for demilitarisation, soon Ukraine will stop using its own equipment altogether. There’s nothing left. Everything on which they fight and everything that they use is brought in from the outside. Well, you can’t fight like that for long.”

PUTIN GIVES WARNING ON F-16S

Independent military analysts say Ukraine has outperformed Russia’s much larger army in nearly 16 months of war, forcing it into major retreats around the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Kherson.

Ukraine’s military chiefs said on Friday that advancing Ukrainian troops were facing “desperate resistance” from Russian forces around the city of Bakhmut, which Russia captured last month after the longest battle of the war.

Ukraine says it has recaptured seven villages and 100 square km (38 square miles) in the early stages of its counteroffensive.

But Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Friday its forces had repelled numerous attempted counterattacks by the Ukrainian army at different frontline locations in the last 24 hours, inflicting severe losses on Kyiv’s forces.

Putin said Western-supplied hardware such as German-made Leopard tanks was regularly destroyed and if Kyiv got U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets from its allies, they would go up in flames too.

“F-16s will also be burning, there is no doubt. But if they will be stationed outside Ukraine and used in combat operations we will have to look at how to engage and where to engage those assets being used in combat operations against us.”

That, he said, represented “a serious danger” of dragging NATO further into the conflict.

African Leaders In Ukraine For Peace Mission Amidst Russian Shelling

0

KYIV: A delegation of African leaders began a peace mission in Kyiv on Friday, undeterred by what Ukraine said was a volley of Russian missiles intended to greet them in the capital.

At least two explosions rocked the capital but mayor Vitali Klitschko said they were caused by air defences. He reported no deaths or big damage in the city but emergency services said four people, including a child, were hurt in the Kyiv region.

The peace delegation, including leaders from South Africa, Senegal, Zambia, the Comoros and Egypt, met defence ministry representatives ahead of talks planned later on Friday with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The leaders are due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Saturday and, with Kyiv and Moscow courting the Global South, see a chance to mediate in a war that has hit African countries by disrupting grain and other food supplies.

“The mission is proceeding well and as planned,” the South African presidency said on Twitter after the air strike.

The leaders are seeking agreement on a series of “confidence building measures”, but Kyiv has said its own peace initiative must be the basis of any settlement and has launched a counteroffensive to push back Russian occupying forces.

The Kremlin, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, has played down the chances of meaningful peace talks with Kyiv. It says conditions for a peace process are not in place, but that it is ready to listen and is open to outside initiatives.

The African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Senegalese President Macky Sall, began their trip by visiting the town of Bucha, outside Kyiv. Ukraine says Russian occupiers carried out executions, rapes and torture in Bucha, and international investigators are collecting evidence of war crimes. Russia denies the allegations.

JOSHUA KATO: Strategic Tax Planning For Financial Year 2023/2024

0
JOSHUA KATO

By Joshua Kato

Taxes are one of the largest expenses any company faces; paying less can mean higher earnings and, in turn, higher value for shareholders. So it is no surprise that companies seek to reduce the amount they pay. Business owners tend to leave tax planning until the last minute.

JOSHUA KATO

It is prudent to begin planning for your taxes at the start of the year by identifying tax deductions, tax credits, and exemptions over the course of a calendar year, tax planning is a legal means of minimizing tax liabilities over a calendar year. Therefore, financial security and tax savings can only be achieved with a reduced fiscal burden.

The economy has had challenges, starting from inflation-related cost increases, ongoing supply disruptions among others. Whether you’ve had an excellent year or struggled, year-end decisions in whatever manner, say from income to expenses to equipment purchases have a significant impact on your tax picture.

2023/2024 is an important year to think carefully in terms of overall tax planning to allow you to take control of your tax situation, maximize savings, and ensure compliance with applicable tax laws.

Do the following ahead of the new financial Year 2023/2024

  1. Step-up your business book-keeping and records management. Keeping records is crucial for so many reasons, including monitoring the progress of a business, preparing tax returns, identifying various receipt sources and keeping track of deductible expenses. Keep track of the gross income your business earns, and as well have expense record. Failure to keep the necessary information or any other proof of transactions leaves the URA with no option but to determine your income using other methods and also to reduce the expenses you deducted. Part IV of the Tax Procedures Code Act imposes an obligation on a person carrying on a business to maintain accounts and records. Records should be kept for five years after the end of the tax period to which they relate.
  2. Do proper business planning. In business, tax planning helps in managing cash flow, optimizing deductions, and ensuring compliance. Review your business structure, expenses, and income sources. Make strategic decisions that minimize tax burdens and supports your long-term business growth.
  3. Compliance with tax laws. Uganda’s tax laws have always changed from year to year. Financial year 2023/24 will be affected by the tremendous tax amendments that were passed by the parliament. Staying informed about these changes is essential to ensure compliance. By proactively planning for any new tax laws or regulations that may affect your financial situation, you can avoid penalties and surprises when filing your tax returns from the URA.
  4. Investment planning: Tax planning involves considering the tax implications of your investments. You have a duty to understand the tax treatment of different investment options, such as stocks, bonds, or real estate, you can make informed decisions to minimize capital gains taxes. The new tax amendments repealed initial allowances for qualifying depreciable assets and industrial buildings. It is prudent that you plan well your investment.
  5. Maximizing deductions and exemptions: Proper planning will help you identify allowable expenses and exemptions that can help reduce your taxable income. Based on the type of business that you’re in, identifying and capitalizing on such expenses will help you plan well for taxes.
  6. Create a smart plan for paying taxes. The sooner you have an idea of your business’s general outlook for the tax year, the better prepared you are to prevent cash flow disruptions. Many businesses have faced higher costs due to inflation since 2020 and only proper thinking ahead about you’re your business will owe in the next 6months could prevent you from facing liquidity problems at tax time. The new tax bills presented a waiver of interest on voluntary payment of principal tax. The Commissioner shall waive the taxpayer’s liability for interest and penalty if the taxpayer voluntarily pays, by 31 December 2023, the principal tax outstanding as of 30 June 2023. This is a good strategy to identify your tax liability and voluntarily pay.
  7. Consult a Tax Advisor. One of the best things you can do as a business owner to minimize the amount of tax you are required to pay is to consult a tax advisor. Even if you are someone who keeps a close eye on business news and stays up to date on tax law changes, you still need professional advice to help you file your taxes. Business tax filings can be complex, and the penalties for mistakes or oversights can be high. Ultimately, paying for a tax advisor will be less expensive than trying to clean up the aftermath of a mistake with your taxes.

Failure to proactively deal with tax issues as soon as they happen will expose you to risks with the URA when it comes to timely meeting of tax obligations. Last minute handling of tax issues becomes complex and costly. Do not be caught offside!

British Oil Giant Shell Exits Pakistan After 75 Years

0

Shell Pakistan (SPL) announced Wednesday that its parent company, Shell Petroleum Company, would be exiting the South Asian nation after 75 years. It would sell its 77 per cent shareholding in the local business, which suffered massive losses in 2022 due to devaluation in the Pakistani rupee, exchange rates, overdue receivables and the ongoing economic crisis in Pakistan, Reuters reported.

A spokesperson for Shell Pakistan said in a statement, “To support its intention to high-grade and simplify its portfolio, Shell Petroleum Company Ltd … has initiated a sales process to sell its 77.42 per cent shareholding in Shell Pakistan Ltd.” That includes “all of SPL’s Downstream businesses and SPL’s 26 per cent ownership of Pak-Arab Pipeline

Company Ltd (PAPCO),” the spokesperson added.

SPL to continue to list on Pakistan Stock Exchange
SPL, which is listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange, clarified that the operations of the company will continue, and Shell’s exit will not have any impact on the company’s listing.

In a notice sent to the exchange, SPL wrote that Shell informed its board of directors about its intentions of selling the holdings in a meeting on June 14. “Shell has entered into a process and wants to be transparent,” the spokesperson said.

Shell’s move triggers political row in Pakistan
After Shell’s announcement to withdraw from Pakistan, Farrukh Habib, the former Minister of State for Information and president of PTI West Punjab, criticised the government led by Shehbaz Sharif, labelling it as a ‘fascist regime’.

Habib wrote in his tweet, “Multinationals are on way out from Pakistan, now Shell has decided to sell its shareholding from Pakistan. The reasons include a highly uncertain political environment, regulated markets, capital controls, import restrictions, policy inconsistency, and higher taxes. Big multinational companies like Shell divestment, who have catered to Pakistan for more than 50 years will give a very bad signal and completely no confidence in Shehbaz Sharif Fascist regime.”

The news of Shell’s departure also elicited disappointment from Pakistani internet users. One Twitter user expressed that this development is only the beginning of a much larger problem. The user’s comment came in response to a tweet by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf regarding Shell’s exit.

Many individuals blamed the Pakistan Army, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar for the poor economic conditions that ultimately led to Shell’s departure from the country after a presence of 75 years.

U.S. Urges Kyiv’s Allies To ‘Dig Deep’ To Arm Ukraine

0

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called on Kyiv’s allies on Thursday to “dig deep” to provide more arms and ammunition to fight Russia’s attack on Ukraine, particularly for air defenses.

Addressing a meeting of defense ministers from the U.S.-led Contact Group of some 50 countries that send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, Austin stressed Kyiv needed both short-term and long-term support as the conflict was a “marathon, not a sprint.”

At the meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Austin hailed the group’s prior deliveries of Patriot, IRIS-T and NASAMS air defense systems as having protected Ukraine from Russian missile attacks. But he said Ukraine needed even more.

“I ask that the members of this Contact Group continue to dig deep to provide Ukraine with the air defense assets and munitions that it so urgently needs to protect its citizens,” Austin said. “We’ll also continue to adapt our assistance to meet the changing circumstances on the ground in the changing needs of Ukraine’s forces.”

It was the 13th meeting of the contact group, which Washington set up last year to coordinate western aid for Kyiv.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov attended the meeting and was expected to brief his counterparts on Ukraine’s counteroffensive to retake more territory from Russian forces. The campaign is expected to use hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles supplied by the West.

Later in the day, NATO defense ministers will meet separately with Reznikov to discuss their support for Kyiv.

The meeting comes as NATO members are engaged in intense discussions over Ukraine’s desire to join the alliance and long-term plans to assure the country’s security after the conflict ends.

According to Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri have made an enquiry to acquire Balogun on loan, however, the north Londoners are only willing to sell him.

It has also been claimed that Arsenal are looking to receive a transfer fee of around €40m for the USA international.

Balogun enjoyed his breakout senior season on loan in France with Reims, where he scored 22 goals and created three more for his teammates in 39 appearances for the French outfit.

It remains to be seen if the San Siro outfit will make a meaningful approach for Balogun in the ongoing summer transfer window.
