Liverpool Convincingly Swallows Watford at Vacarage Road

0

Liverpool romped to a convincing 5-0 win over Watford at Vicarage Road with Roberto Firmino netting a hat-trick as the Hornets produced a hapless showing in Claudio Ranieri’s first game in charge.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring with his 100th Premier League goal, calmly finishing first-time into the bottom corner from Mohamed Salah’s lovely ball in behind.

Firmino profited from poor Watford defending to find the net either side of half-time, tapping in from James Milner’s pass after the home defence had been carved open, before pouncing on a loose ball from a badly defended cross.

Salah then scored a sensational solo goal, making a mockery of three defenders’ attempts to win the ball from him before curling emphatically into the far corner, while Firmino struck again in stoppage-time to compound the hosts’ misery.

Watford had survived a scare even before Liverpool led after nine minutes when Salah spun his man on the right and played a superb ball in behind with the outside of his left foot for Mane, who slotted coolly into the bottom-left corner.

Salah nearly got on the scoresheet himself soon after, taking over from Andy Robertson on the edge of the box and curling towards the top-left corner, but Ben Foster made a fantastic save to deny him.

Instead it was Firmino who doubled the Reds’ advantage after 37 minutes, finding an empty net from close range following Milner’s cut-back, and Naby Keita might have hit a third before the break as his shot was deflected onto the crossbar.

Firmino scored again seven minutes into the second half after Foster was unable to hold Craig Cathcart’s misdirected interception, allowing the Liverpool striker to pounce on the loose ball for an easy tap-in.

Salah stole the show in the 54th minute with an incredible individual goal, turning three Watford defenders inside-out before lashing a sweet strike into the bottom-left corner from a tight angle, Firmino getting the assist.

Not to be outdone, however, Firmino popped up in the first minute of added time to turn substitute Neco Williams’ low cross in to complete his hat-trick and round off the scoring.

What does it mean? Rampant Reds go top

The big win for Jurgen Klopp’s men sees the Reds leapfrog Chelsea into pole position in the Premier League table, although the Blues have a game in hand against Brentford to play later on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel’s men must now win against Brentford in order to reclaim top spot, with Liverpool two points ahead of them in the standings.

Mane joins Premier League 100 club

Mane’s opening goal after just nine minutes was his 100th Premier League goal, making the 29-year-old just the third African player to reach the landmark after Didier Drogba and Salah.

The Senegal winger also becomes just the third player to score 100 or more Premier League goals with none of them being penalties, joining Les Ferdinand (149) and Emile Heskey (110).

Rough return for Ranieri

New Watford manager Ranieri suffered his biggest ever Premier League defeat, while no manager whose first game with a club in the competition came at home has suffered a bigger margin of defeat (also Alan Smith with Crystal Palace v Liverpool in 1994, 6-1).

The Italian came into the contest boasting the highest home win rate against Liverpool in Premier League history (80 per cent), winning four of his five such games against them, losing the other, but was unable to build on that record.

Key Opta Stats: Salah matches Drogba

– Courtesy of his 104th Premier League goal, Salah became the joint-top-scoring African player in the history of the competition (level with Drogba).
– Liverpool are the first English top-flight side in history to score 3+ goals in seven consecutive away games in all competitions.
– Salah has scored in each of his last eight games for Liverpool in all competitions; the longest run of scoring in consecutive appearances for the club since Daniel Sturridge in February 2014 (8).
– Firmino is the first Brazilian to score more than one hat-trick in the Premier League, with the Liverpool attacker also bagging three against Arsenal in December 2018.

What’s next?

Watford’s next contest is a trip to Goodison Park to face Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton next Saturday, while the Reds travel to Spain for a Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday before a huge clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford in eight days.

Red Devils Collapse Late As They Concede Defeat To Licester

0

Leicester City came from behind to beat Manchester United 4-2 in a thriller on Saturday and end the Red Devils’ long unbeaten away run in the Premier League.

It looked as though United’s English league record of 29 games without defeat on the road would continue when Mason Greenwood opened the scoring with a stunning strike.

However, Leicester levelled through Youri Tielemans following an error from the returning Harry Maguire, and Caglar Soyuncu prodded home to put the hosts ahead with 12 minutes to go.

In a frantic finale, Marcus Rashford marked his first appearance of the season with an equalizer before Leicester restored their lead from kick-off, Jamie Vardy blasting home from Ayoze Perez’s cut-back. Patson Daka added a fourth in injury time as United lost for the fourth time in seven matches.

Greenwood’s first attempt of the match was a placed effort from 25 yards out that was comfortably saved by Kasper Schmeichel. In the 19th minute, he went for power from the same position, blasting an unstoppable effort in off the left-hand post.

United threatened a second, Maguire heading over the bar from a corner and Schmeichel denying Cristiano Ronaldo from inside the box, although VAR would likely have intervened for a Jadon Sancho offside had the Portugal star scored.

The teams were level at the break, though, as United handed Leicester their equaliser. From a free-kick on the edge of their own box, some slack passing ended in Maguire being robbed by Kelechi Iheanacho, who laid the ball off to Tielemans to curl a finish over David de Gea from the edge of the area.

Leicester carried the greater threat after the restart, although Greenwood could not convert an excellent chance to restore United’s lead from six yards out. The Foxes continued to cause problems winning the ball back high up the pitch, and Tielemans would have curled home a fine second goal had it not been for the fingertips of De Gea.

Soyuncu poked the ball in after a scramble at a Leicester corner, but Rashford’s timely return from a shoulder problem looked to have rescued United as he raced onto VIctor Lindelof’s pass and slotted high past Schmeichel.

Yet a minute later, Perez found space down the United right and found Vardy, who lashed a shot past De Gea, and Daka made certain of Leicester’s third win of the season when he bundled the ball in after Wan-Bissaka conceded a free-kick that United could not clear.

What does it mean? United’s tough run off to a terrible start

Given Leicester’s recent form in their four-game winless league run, this was arguably United’s best chance of a victory in a sequence of matches that will see them face Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal before the start of December.

The manner of the visitors’ defeat evoked memories of their 5-3 loss here under Louis van Gaal back in 2014-15 and certainly offered little to suggest they will come through the coming weeks with more good results than bad.

They are four points behind league leaders Liverpool, while that record unbeaten away run – a screen for much of their shortcomings – has now been comprehensively dismantled.

Youri-n luck, Leicester: Tielemans was the heartbeat of Leicester’s play, having more touches (92) and completed passes (63) than anyone else on the pitch and creating three goal scoring chances. If he did not quite mean his first-half finish, the quality of his display meant he deserved a slice of luck.

Harried Maguire: Back in the side following a calf injury that saw him miss four United games and the international break, Maguire looked like a man short of match practice against his old club.

With the home fans’ jeers in his ears, it was his dawdling that allowed Leicester the chance to equalise and he never looked comfortable when put under pressure. He also missed a good chance with a header when United were 1-0 up.

What’s next?

United are in Champions League action at home to Atalanta on Wednesday, when Leicester are at Spartak Moscow in the Europa League.

Paul Pogba Sends Stinging Message to Manchester United Bosses After Defeat To Leicester City

Manchester United yesterday lost 4-2 away to Leicester city. Mason Greenwood scored the goal before Youri Tielemans equalized in the first half. In a frantic period in the second 45 mins, Caglar Soyunch put the hosts ahead, Marcus Rashford equalized but United conceded with in minute to a Jamie Vardy half- volley.

However, the loss has put Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solsjaer in the spotlight with fans fuming against his tactical skills that are not consistent.

This has forced Paul Pogba who came back to the team after winning the UEFA nations cup with France to send his bosses a message that also left Manchester bosses supporting his call to the bosses.

According to the BBC, Pogba says Manchester United bosses need to “change some thing”. This message has left many guessing he was hitting at the team boss ole Gunnar whose time at Old Trafford might come to an end if the boys continue with such disappointing performance.

It is barely three days to Gaddafi Football Club’s historic match in Uganda Premier League. The team will kick their first ball in the highest division in the face of Busoga United at Kyabazinga Stadium on Sunday.

Christened the Soldier Boys, Gaddafi seized football in Eastern region by storm, Wheeling through the lower divisions with eyes shut enroute to national leagues – FUFA Big League and UPL.

However, life in the second division where they played last season was a rollercoaster. They found themselves in the wilderness just after two games when they failed to record a point from their opening two matches in the competition. They terminated the Ssebagalas – Frank and Mike, and commissioned Hassan Zungu to get them back on the rails.

By mid season, the team computed 13 points, two shy off pacesetters – Arua Hill SC in the Elgon group and qualified for the playoffs with 24 points after finishing second in the regular season.

They then had to negotiate the Nyamityobora FC hurdle who they later annihilated 4-0 before they put two goals past favorites Proline in their ultimate game in Big league to secure the third promotional slot to UPL

It was a dream come true for the army side and they now seek to swim in the waters of the superleague without strain.

“We are lucky that we spent one season in each of the lower divisions,” club chairman – Lt. Col. Edrine Ochien said on Tuesday.

“But we are here now to stay.”

“Our major target this season is to remain in the league. We are going to study how football is played in the super league, then we shall implement our findings in the following season and compete for the title in our third season.”

Change of commander

Abu Mubarak Wamboya was trusted to command the Soldier Boys in this UPL mission. The former Vipers SC and Onduparaka tactician, who was officially announced as the head coach after penning a two year contract, also said they will play for safety.

L-R: Wamboya (head coach) And Zungu (assistant coach)

” We are going to play exciting football that is result oriented, and If we can finish in the top ten, that will be good for us.”

Hassan Zungu was reduced to an assistant coach, Frank Ssebagala rejoined the team as the goalkeeping teacher while Geoffrey Ngalire will be their fitness trainer.

Memorandum of understanding

The Soldier Boys signed a two year agreement with Nile International Hospital in a non cash deal worthy 60 million. The health facility will provide healthcare to the team for a year.

New Signings

Gaddafi has made several reinforcements to their squad to suit in elite football. The new recruits combine a mix of young talent and experience, and prominent in the group of their 27 man squad are; Jamaldeen Buchochera, Paul Musamali, Franco Onen, Yunus Sibira, Alex Kitata, Hassan Musana, Brian Kalumba and Faizal Muwawu.

Sigh Of Relief As Gender Ministry, UNFPA agree To Work Together On Eliminating Teenage Pregnancies

0

The Minister of State for Gender and Culture Affairs, Hon. Mutuuzo Peace Regis has today met with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative, Suzanne Mandong, during which they resolved to partner on activities to stem the increasing teenage pregnancies in the country.

UNFPA-Country-Rep.-Suzanne-Mandong-left-handsover-a-present-to-Minister-of-State-for-Gender-and-Culture-Hon.-Mutuuzo-Peace-Regis-after-the-meeting-on-Tuesday.

The meeting held at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development offices in Kampala resolved to engage the high-level policy dialogue on eliminating Gender Based Violence to draw immediate actions to end teenage pregnancies.

Uganda has experienced a high rise in teenage pregnancies over the period of lockdowns and school closures instituted to curb the spread of the novel Corona Virus.

The 2020 annual Uganda Police Force crime report put the number of defiled children at 14,230, however the figure is projected to be far higher than this as most cases are never reported.

Mandong, who has been in the country for a month and a half now, said the skyrocketing teenage pregnancies were the first news item she noticed upon arriving in Uganda and it has been troubling her.

“Looking at the babies having babies is very painful. My heart has been bleeding. We need to look at things we can do together (immediately) to address this challenge. Otherwise we shall have failed our children,” an emotional Mandong noted.

Minister Mutuuzo, who is also the Women Member of Parliament for Bunyangabu District, said she had done a survey in her district over the last weekend and registered over 3,000 teenage pregnancies across the sub counties.

“It’s now clear that the state of affairs is threatening to erode the achievements the country has made over the last 20 years in eliminating Gender Based Violence. Many harmful practices have made a return including forced marriages.” She said, adding that there is also a danger of increased HIV infections.

She observed that it’s unfortunate to force the victims of teenage pregnancies into marriage because it was never their wish to get pregnant.

Mandong noted that there is need for concerted effort ranging from prevention, response to management of teenage pregnancies.

“Our programming can look at returning the children to school, as first priority and skills training for those who won’t be going back to school.” She said, adding that mental health and psychosocial support would be a great incorporation to the interventions.

Meanwhile, Mandong commended Uganda for the overall success in eliminating Gender Based Violence especially Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) whose prevalence now stands at 3 percent down from over 50 percent.

She emphasized that it was achievable for the country to totally eliminate FGM to zero percentage by 2030.

Mutuuzo revealed that FGM is now being practiced clandestinely in only five districts and specific sub counties due to the increased awareness and the enactment of facilitating laws.

She however decried the continued prevalence of the vice in Kenya, which is having ripple effects in Uganda especially in those districts and sub counties that border Kenya.

She appealed to UNFPA to prioritise the establishment of an FM radio station in Bukwo to support the FGM elimination interventions since the population in Bukwo depends on radio frequencies and programmes from Kenya.

Mutuuzo hinted on the need for a baseline survey to establish the remaining cultural harmful practices so as to devise appropriate programmes.

She also underscored the need for GBV shelters across the country where survivours can access a string of support services in the line of prevention, response and management of Gender Based Violence.

UNFPA supports various programmes in the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development towards the elimination of GBV through policy development and implementation, support to Community Development Officers and law enforcement officers, legislation, engagement of cultural institutions and communities, data collection and analysis and support to the Sauti 116 Helpline, where GBV and violence Against Children cases are reported and addressed.

The meeting was also attended by the Commissioner Gender and Women Affairs, Angela Nakafeero, the Principal Women in Development Officer, Annet Kabarungi, the UNFPA Programme Analyst on GBV Harriet Ndagire and the UNFPA programme analyst on Gender and Human Rights, Grace Ikirimat.
