Godwin Acai, the former UPC party chairman for Bazzar East in Lira City East Division, has endorsed Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng for a second term in 2026. Acai, who had exposed the UPC’s greed and internal problems, was forced to leave the party during an emergency meeting in Lira City last week.

Following several revelations that led to his dismissal, Acai stated while appearing on the QFM radio morning show, that his support for Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng was motivated by Betty Amongi’s alleged support for non-UPC members.

He claimed that UPC has violated its party constitution and is now working with non-party members. Given the rivalry between Dr. Aceng and the outgoing Oyam South MP, Amongi, his support for the incumbent Lira City woman MP has piqued interest.

Dr. Aceng has received widespread praise for her performance as MP in less than five years, with Godwin Acai describing her as a strong leader.

The former UPC local leader stated that the UPC has not held national delegates conferences as required by the constitution, which calls for such meetings at least twice every five years. He feels that unless Jimmy Akena collaborates with the Congress team, his leadership has gone beyond its constitutional mandate and that he ought to resign.

His criticism also points to deeper issues within the UPC that must be addressed, despite Akena’s proposal to amend the party constitution to allow for direct voting for a presidential candidate.

Earlier, a group of UPC members met at Grand Pacific Hotel and elected Tonny Acobi as Bazzar East’s chairman and Thomas Acai as treasurer, succeeding Acobi.

Robert James Kalinda was elected as information officer. Despite leadership changes and his decision to support an NRM member, Acai maintains his position as UPC chairman for Bazzar.

Acai has also questioned the validity of the Monday election, citing constitutional violations. Isaah Otto Amiza, one of the UPC party members, but with strong attachment to Peter Walubiri group, has condemned the toppling of Acai from the party leadership.

Otto, in an audio shared on various social media platforms, describes Acai as a strong mobiliser and leader who helped him, and Jimmy Akena a lot.
