MITOOMA GROUP TO MUSEVENI: Don’t Return Balunywa But Give MUBS top Job To Our Own Son Dr Muhwezi

Recently a group of opinion leaders from Mitooma district wrote to the President Museveni demanding that Prof Juma Wasswa Balunywa be disregarded and the position of MUBS principle be given to their own son Prof Moses Muhwezi.

He is the one who has been serving as Ag principle since May last year when the education minister doctor John Muyingo ignored the MUBS council chairman Isaac Ngobi and forced Balunywa out of office after he had spent more than 20 years struggling to build the business school from the scratch.

The MUBS council had looked through Balunywa’s performance in the past 5 years and found him very good and recommended for his reappointment to steer MUBS as principle for another 5 years. When the minister of education JC Muyingo ignored them because he has never liked Balunywa, the MUBS council members decided to appoint his deputy Moses Muhwezi in the acting capacity. He had been deputy principle under Balunywa for 8 years.

Since he became acting principal, Prof Muhwezi has had many lobby groups go full circle to market him to people who matter. Not very long ago a group coordinated by his very aggressive wife with whom he lives at their rented home in Bukoto, approached deputy speaker Tayebwa Thomas and lobbied him for support. Even when he comes from Mitooma, Tayebwa refused saying he is a big person who can’t involve himself in such petty fights.

The group members finally resorted to writing to the president directly. In their petition they claimed that Mitooma has been marginalized for a long time and their son Muhwezi deserves to be the principle for MUBS taking over from his mentor Wasswa Balunywa.

Museveni saw the petition and refused to act upon it because Balunywa is like a son to him. He knew Balunywa’s parents since the fronasa days and Balunywa also used to deliver to him messages and financial support for the NRA bush war which would be mobilised by his uncle Kirunda Kivejinja. Balunywa’s parents were UPM diehards and one of them was even a leader in one of the 11 Busoga chiefdoms.

Museveni has always coordinated many clandestine political missions through his son Wasswa Balunywa who he isn’t prepared to throw under the bus especially after losing his uncle Kivejinja whose family and descendants state house looks after through Balunywa. Balunywa directly deals with the state house controller, the PPS and Brigadier Nalweyiso to deliver school fees for more than 100 orphans that Kirunda Kivejinja left behind.

So because of all these factors the president refused to entertain the anti-Balunywa petitions the people of Mitooma have been sending to him while marketing their son Prof Moses Muhwezi. Instead the president has been pressurizing the education ministry bosses as to why Balunywa can’t be reappointed back to consolidate his achievements at MUBS for another 5 years.

The president is also fearing the possibility of one of the powerful EAC regional universities in Nairobi to grab Balunywa and give him the Vice Chancellor job because they believe a lot in him as a good manager. Already Uganda made history years ago when it hired a Kenyan professor Ndiege to head Kyambogo University as the VC.

Sources say that at the education ministry, there are several bosses who don’t like Balunywa because they keep telling the President that he is a very complicated Musoga. The President is also concerned about the PR problems he can face towards 2026 as Balunywa’s brothers and sisters in Busoga will go cursing that Prof Muhwezi has been given their job because he is a Munyankole from the big man’s place.

The group of professors and senior lecturers who are determined to make sure Balunywa doesn’t return to MUBS includes the dean for vocational studies faculty Godfrey Kitui, dean computing Sony Nyeko, Dr. Suleit Tumwine, Dr. Steven Nkunda, Ernest Abaho and many others.

Some don’t like him because Balunywa refused to help them enough on personal issues when he was the principle for MUBS. Some others are motivated by religious and tribal differences, to hate Balunywa who Museveni still needs to keep transforming the business school for another 5 years.
