He noted that the country’s efforts align with Kenya’s Vision 2030, the United Nations’ Agenda 2030, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which all underscore the importance of sustainable development. “Kenya continues to lead Africa and the globe in Climate Action through accelerated investment in various initiatives- key among them- transition to Green and Clean Energy. While this is important, blending efficiency and conservation of energy is central to delivering more goods and services with less power as we march towards 100% green and clean transition as underscored by Kenya’s Vision 2030, Agenda 2030 of the UN and Agenda 2063 of the African Union,’ Gachagua said. Dr Benson Oloya addresses people during a Thanksgiving ceremony recently.

BY MIKE RWOTHOMIO

Dr. Benson Oloya, A Doctor of philosophy (PhD) holder in chemistry and a lecturer at Muni University Arua, has advised religious leaders and believers across divide not to label herbs that are medicinal plants as evil.

He made the appeal during his thanksgiving ceremony at Mayors garden in Paidha Town Council, Zombo District on Saturday, May 5 2024. The event attracted hundreds of educationists, religious and political leaders, students amongst others.

Dr Benson Oloya addresses people during a Thanksgiving ceremony

The first principle in medicine is to do no harm and safety is always a fundamental principle in the provision of any health-care treatment and procedures according to health experts.

Oloya who during his study discovered two new organic  compounds not known before encouraged religious leaders and believers not to be discouraged from using local herbs for treatments of some complications emphasizing their importance in healing humanity.

He also warned witch doctors against taking ownership of herbs adding that the herbs were made by God to help humanity.

“Many times Christians have shied away from using herbs, I want to make some clarification that not all herbs are bad, God made some of these plants with therapeutic properties, so the witchdoctors are claiming what does not belong to them, God created certain plants with medicinal properties and we should accept that God created these plants to heal humanity.” Oloya explained thus eliciting applause from members of the public who gathered to witness the pompous celebration that started with prayers and a snaking queues of match on the streets of Paidha town council.

Dr Oloya’s friend during his thanksgiving ceremony.

In his study, Dr Oloya Out of the local herbs found nine compounds active on tuberculosis bacteria and also discovered two new organic compounds that he was given privilege to name.

“In my research, I discovered two new organic compounds not known before, and I was given privilege to name them. I named one compound Adubangoamide, a name I derived from my late mother Zila  Adubango and I named another compound as dranzoanol, derived from former and the late vice chancellor of Muni University professor  Dranzoa Christine” Oloya explained.

Tuberculosis, a communicable disease is among the leading causes of illness worldwide. Before the onset of Coro virus (covid-19) pandemic, TB was the main cause of death resulting from a single infectious agent and was ranked above HIV/AIDS according to 2021 statistics published by World Health Organisation.

What Ugandan law say about herbal medicine?

The traditional and complementary  medicine act 2019, doesn’t restrict the usage of herbal or complementary medicine but said “ A person shall not operate, own or use premises as a practitioner, producer, manufacturer, supplier or seller of traditional, herbal or complementary medicine unless that person is registered as a traditional or complementary medicine practitioner”

For centuries, traditional and complementary medicine has been an integral resource for health in households and communities globally with 170 countries reporting the use of traditional medicine according to 2023 report by world health organization.

Dr Benson Oloya whose education journey was riddled with myriads of stumbling blocks rose through the ranks breaking all odds to become a well-established researcher.

In his speech to the public, Oloya commended the Retired Archbishop of the church of Uganda Dr Henry Luke Orombi who accorded him scholarship to study twenty years ago, when actually his hope of proceeding with education was waning due financial challenges. He encouraged the learners to emulate his academic journey reverberating “my dear learners here, you can also make it like me “. He also encouraged parents to give necessary support to their children as they study.

Oloya who transcends into certified researcher now join the table of over 2000 PhDs holders in Uganda, most of whom are based at Makerere University.

The Woman MP of Nebbi Agnes Acibu was one of Dr. Benson Oloya‘s teachers  at Erussi secondary school in Nebbi. She recounted the researcher’s humility and commitment towards achieving his goals. Acibu advised learners to emulate the life of Oloya to become successful in life.

Meanwhile the District education officer of Zombo Nickolas Odeba decried high level of school dropout rate in the district stressing the need for more mobilization and sensitization, to have more students complete higher level of education.

“If we can have our brothers and sisters like Ben coming, and celebrating with us this education achievements, I think it’s a motivation to the young ones in the school and I pray that they see this example and they move further” Odeba explained adding that amidst this “we have our own challenge of education within the district and we need more mobilization on that”

Retired Arch bishop of the church of Uganda Dr. Henry Luke Orombi who was the main celebrant at the event rallied people in the region to support education of young ones in the region. Orombi called upon people to desist from negative ideologies that nothing good can come from the area.

Education background

Dr Oloya Started his academic journey at Zombo lower primary in the current Zombo town council before shifting to Kaya Primary school, and later Paidha demonstration school where he completed his primary seven.

He went to Erussi secondary school for his “0” level and St Aloysius college Nyapea for his “A” level

He later went to Mbarara University for his undergraduate and masters and did his PhD from Makerere University. Despite attaining his PhD at Makerere, he did his laboratory work from the University of Wolfsburg in Germany out of a memorandum of understanding since he did not have the equipment from Makerere University. He did part of his work from Egerton University in Kenya where he met many friends.

Reading from Dr. Oloya`s academic journey riddled with back-breaking experience, local leaders say his experience should serve as a great lesson to young ones  that amidst challenges, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

A PhD is earned after a master’s degree and it honours’ one with the title of doctor. It takes more theoretical approach to learning new things with the research as the core basis.

Trade Ministry, Zombo Leaders Intensify Efforts To Recover Missing Tea Processor

Trade Ministry, Zombo Leaders Intensify Efforts To Recover Missing Tea Processor

BY ALEX PITHUA

Zombo district officials led by deputy resident commissioner Grace Atim and the ministry of trade and industry embarked on recovering the tea processor for Zombo tea growers. The ministry and district officials say the machine and component was delivered to a tea expert Edwin Betukunda to deliver to farmers to crush mature trees.

The first attempt to retrieve the Machine from where it was hidden failed, as Zombo district officials including Ministry of Trade representative Julius ordered for the arrest of Amoti Nalongo whom they suspect to have the key to the warehouse.

During the moment of arrest, officials said she was frustrating the effort to retrieve the tea processing Machine meant for Zombo tea farmers. But Edwin was a no show although these officials revealed that they had contacted him about their plan to pick the machine from him.

Nalongo, a resident of Jupathombu Cell Uturgang Upper Ward Paidha town council was subsequently arrested on Friday 17th May, when district officials, tea farmers’ representatives, ministry’s officials, and police asked her to avail them with the warehouse’s key where the Machine was kept illegally but she told them that it wasn’t in her possession.

According to the district and the ministry, the machine was given to help the farmers process tea as they await the government to establish factories for full large-scale production. They implored that Edwin Betukunda, the proprietor of Edwin Foundation didn’t deliver the machine to the intended beneficiaries some two years ago over unclear reasons.

Atim, the deputy resident commissioner says they decided to commit Nalongo to Paidha police Station until Edwin produces the key to the warehouse.

“The farmers are frustrated, the tea are overgrown. The ministry saw it right to come and we retrieve the machine and hand it over to the rightful beneficiaries.” “Unfortunately, on reaching the warehouse where the machine is stored the person who is in custody of the key refused to hand over the key to the team comprising me RDC, Ministry, farmers’ representative district production officer, district commercial officer, LCV representatives and journalists.” Because of this obstruction we have decided to commit her to Paidha police station until Edwin produces the machine.” Atim shares the ordeal

Dr. Walter Kumakech the Zombo district production officer, observes that they resolved with ministry’s officials in a meeting in the district on Friday the machine be retrieved and taken to farmers in Zeu where the district have identified a place to install the tea processing machine at ministry’s cost.

He appealed to the residents of Jupathombu Cell to provide extra security and report weird movement around the warehouse at which the machine is purportedly kept.

“In today’s meeting the ministry of trade also told us the processing equipment needs one additional component to complete the processing. But it does not deter the farmers from using it as of now to do processing of tea, so they would only procure and deliver the last component when they see this current machine is being put to use.” Dr. Kumakech explained in a sideline interview with journalists.

Victor Opio, the Chairperson’s Zombo tea growers Cooperative Union, said that farmers are waiting for the machine to be used for its intended purpose adding that acres of tea belonging to hundreds of farmers have grown bushy without harvest leading to losses.

“So we are waiting to retrieve and handover this machine to us so that we can use it for its intended purpose of processing our green leaves.” Opio

Last year, the Zombo district councilors tasked the resident district commissioner, Chief Administrative Officer and LC V to avail the machine upon learning it went missing.

According to the councilors they didn’t see the machine and questioned its whereabouts. Eventually the journalists reported the story sparking public concerns among the locals who demanded for the machine.

In April 2nd 2024, The Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture, Auma Linda Agnes who also doubles as the woman member of Parliament for Lira District presented a committee report on a petition filed by Zombo tea nursery operators and the farmer’s association regarding the delayed supply of tea seedlings to farmers.

The Committee recommended that the government explore ways to improve market access for tea farmers, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries create capacity-building programs for local farmers in tea agronomy.

Adding that the government should disburse Shs19.5 billion to expedite the establishment of a tea factory in Zombo.

The Leader of Opposition (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi, observed that the government ought to compensate the tea nursery operators since they were verified and given go ahead to grow the seedlings.

For his part the MP for Ora county who doubles as chairman Climate Change Committee and Chairman West Nile MPs, Laurence Songa Biyika accused Edwin mismanaging tea project in Zombo district adding that over shs40 millions of Zombo tea corporate Union have been embezzled by Edwin.

In the early 1960s, tea growing was introduced in Alur kingdom and eventually collapsed in the 1990s, consequently the government and His Royal Highness, Phillip Olarker Rauni III of Alur kingdom in 2014 revamped tea growing with emphasis to boost income to the locals.

The incident is said to have occurred on Thursday 16, 2024 at around 1pm in the rest room of his office located within the Methodist Church, Meriwa Ward in the Tanzanian administrative Capital of Dodoma.

Speaking about the incident, Dodoma Acting Regional Police Commander (RPC), Alchelaus Mutalemwa would later on Friday tell media that police is actively investing the incident to establish how it exactly unfolded.

“Investigations at the scene revealed a note with a message indicating that debts, along with a dispute over the operation of private schools, were the reasons for the suicide”-Mutalemwa revealed

Gervas Lugunyale, the Meriwa Ward Chairperson said on the fateful day at 1pm, he received a call from one of the pastors seeking assistance after Bishop Bundala, 55 years old was found hanging in his office.

“I sought the assistance of the police immediately upon arriving at the scene, when i entered office, I discovered, to my great sorrow, that Bishop Bundala had already taken matters into his own hands. His lifeless body was hanging”-he said

Furthermore, Mr Lugunyale said on the Bishop’s desk there was a document summarizing the debts he owned and those owed to him. Police retrieved the body and took it to the mortuary for postmortem but no total amount of money was indicated on the suicide note

The LC1 Chairman of Zone Number 11, Meriwa Ward, Ipagala district Mr. Jonathan Mpando, said they have been hurt by Bishop Bundala’s demise because he was helpful to the citizens in the area.

Key State House Insider Admits Land Grabbing Is Sometimes Orchestrated By Museveni’s Aides

0

Ms Phiona Barungi, who powerfully serves as Private Secretary to Gen Museveni in charge of Special Duties, made the shocking admission this Thursday during a Dr. Sam Mayanja-convened land baraza meeting that was held in Mpooma Village in Mukono District’s Naama Sub County.

Mayanja was here to respond to a petition by Soroti City-based Doctors Juventile & Elizabeth Emuku whose land (8 acres) had been grabbed by notorious area land dealer Hajjat Jamawa Nantuume (a sickly old lady) who turned round after selling the same to them.

Dr Elizabeth Emuku whose very prime land (8 acres) in Mpooma Mukono had been grabbed by Kifeesi actors impersonating State House.

Residents came in large numbers and gave evidence corroborating the fact that the land was Emukus’ because it was duly sold to them at Shs54m in 2008/2009 by Hajjat Jamawa Nantuume who went as far as introducing them to neighbors and LC1 officials as the new owners of the 8 acres which had previously been hers.

She received the money and signed onto the sales agreement except that she changed her mind and began playing hide and seek the moment she was required to tender her Identity Card to authenticate the transfer of ownership from her names to their names. Years later, Nantuume brought kanyamas around and began destroying the Emukus farm property claiming she was taking back her land because she realizes they had given her little money per acre.

The kanyamas were led by her own son called Moses who was aided by the area LC1 Chairman Constantine Serugo who one of the residents, an old man called Lawrence Mubiru, accused of trying to bribe them to turn against the Emukus yet Hajjat Jamawa Nantuume had introduced them to him as the new owners of the land after she pocketed their purchase price of Shs54m in 2008.

Serugo avoided Mayanja’s meeting claiming his eyes were paining though the Minister nevertheless ordered for his arrest for engagement in corruption and removal from office immediately.

Senior Presidential Assistant in charge of Special Duties Phiona Barungi

In their submissions at the baraza, local residents claimed how Hajjat Jamawa Nantuume brought kanyamas and kifeesi groups to terrorize and beat them up while demanding that they testify against Dr. Emuku. That the kifeesi groups that were terrorising people claimed to be from both State House and President’s Office and justified their torture acts by claiming they had been sent by State House to get the Mpooma Naama Mukono land for the family of a certain big man who they never disclosed.

That the same was reported to the Mukono Police leadership and the RDC Fatuma Ndisaba yet the two offices just ignored the whole thing as opposed to coming in to help the Emukus enforce their lawful claim and right to the land.

It was against this background that Ms Phiona Barungi, a lawyer, used the same meeting to defend the President and First Family saying they are never interested in anybody’s land. She explained that many such impostors have lately been identified and sent to Luzira for impersonating the President, his wife Janet Kataha, his son Gen MK and his daughters. That on four occasions, land grabbers successfully used Janet Museveni’s name to grab people’s land.

Ms Barungi asserted that the President had designated and deployed her to move with Dr. Mayanja to pick Intel on such impersonation claims so that culprits and perpetrators get immediately apprehended. She gave out her phone numbers saying people can report such impostors directly to her office for immediate action.

She explained that the President is aware there are some State House insiders who abusively use their supposed closeness to him and First Family to orchestrate land grabbing by offering cover to rogue-minded actors who continue terrorizing ordinary Ugandans in different parts of the country.

Ms Burungi admitted that it’s true some of the land grabbing by Hajjat Jamawa Nantuume-like rogue-minded actors is enabled by some State House employees who make themselves available to offer cover for land grabbers to successfully use the President’s name, that of State House or President’s Office.

She said she has been active in exposing such rogue-minded State House employees to the President which is why many of them hate her and are always out working hard to demonize her name and antagonize her with both the President and the ordinary people.
