Cristiano Ronaldo

Reds fans seemed particularly angered by the tweet which announced the POTM winner, which contained the phrase, ‘who else?’.

@TheAnfieldTalk vented: “What do you mean who else? The best player in the world has been ROBBED.”

Unsurprisingly, they were not alone in making their frustrations known as the announcement provoked fierce debate.

@TheKopHQ added: “POTM for 3 tap-ins, in 2 games, that inspired Man Utd to 4th place. Nice one.”

Even fans of other clubs seemed perplexed by the decision to credit Ronaldo instead of Salah.

Arsenal fan @RashOusmane said: “RONALDO WON BUT SALAH WON OUR HEARTS.”

Indeed, both players notched three Premier League goals each in the month of September, although the Egyptian outperformed his counterpart in terms of take-ons, shots on target and duels won.

Salah’s form may also have been more noticeable because his phenomenal scoring rate continued in European competition, taking his season’s tally to nine already.

Players like Ivan Toney, Thiago Silva and Mateo Kovacic may also feel aggrieved that they were overlooked for the accolade.

Muhammad Salah

Some have implied that Ronaldo’s recognition is down to his headline-grabbing return, and the fact that he is now the most recognisable and marketable face in the division.

The Portuguese firing in goals at Old Trafford is something fresh and exciting, while Salah putting up extraordinary numbers is frankly nothing new.

Fascinatingly, both players are more than capable of keeping this furious pace up all season, so it remains to be seen who will take home individual silverware in the coming months.
