Moussa Faki Mahamat  Chairperson African Union

The African Union has today decried the numerous attacks South Africans are making on foreigners that has left their businesses looted, others killed and injured.

In a press release sent out on Tuesday by Ms Ebba Kalondo Spokesperson to the Chairperson of AU Commission, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat condemned in the strongest terms, the incidents of violence against nationals of fellow African countries in South Africa, including the looting and destruction of their property

South Africa has been hit by an outbreak of attacks on migrants from other African countries as the nation prepared to host a meeting of political and business leaders from across the continent.

Bloomberg reported that a spate of violence that broke out in suburbs south of Johannesburg’s city center on Sunday and spread to the central business district on Monday saw the destruction of more than 50 shops and business premises mainly owned by Africans from countries in the rest of the continent such as Nigeria and Somalia. Cars and properties were torched and widespread looting took place.

.”The Chairperson reiterates the African Union’s Commission continued commitment to support the South African government in addressing the root causes that led to these despicable acts, in order to promote peace and stability, within the framework of the African Union’s longstanding principles of continental solidarity” reads part of the statement
